Workbench, Navicat, TOAD for MySQL?

I am wondering which of the above most people are using with MySQL?

WorkBench & Toad are free. Navicat is $200?

As you know WorkBench is from the developers of MySQL. It's powerful but, shall we say, an unusual interface. I rarely use it. But it is good for killing run-away processes from hell - like when you create a test query on a view with a zillion tables only to find out it will take 3-years to run. Open WorkBench and kill it.

Personally, I don't use Toad. It's also a little strange & quirky, IMO.

Navicat, which has its faults for sure, I use every day. I find it very easy to navigate in Navicat. But the best thing is, unlike the other two, Navicat allows you to publish to remote locations. You can publish tables, views, etc, synchronize table structures, access remote data directly (no need to copy files or anything). As a matter of fact, Navicat lets you do anything to a remote located database that you can do locally. This makes it so much easier to work with MySQL than the others. It's worth the $200 or whatever they are charging today.

I use Navicat as well, and would describe the others just as Peter did. Navicat has what you need for 95% of the time. It is also ultra cool when it comes to doing data dumps and sync'ing structure or data with a sister copy. The other tools make that more difficult, and I sync structure a dozen times a day because I develop on a local copy, sync with my server copy.

As far as I know, Navicat Lite has been discontinued as of about a year ago. And Navicat Lite didn't allow remote access, synch or publishing - the best features of Navicat.

by remote access you mean accessing remote mysql database, yes i do access the remote database with proper credentials using mysql lite.
synch - i have not done it so no comment there.
publishing - you mean putting all the content of your databse on the remote server, yes i do that with dump and execute sql.

ps: synch is mysql feature itself i think, not of navicat

If you someday decide to replace MySQL with MariaDB then you get integrated HeidiSQL for MariaDB . With HeidiSQL you can do the basic maintenance/synchronizing locally or remotely so no need to install any separate product.

No. I mean you can edit tables, restructure, create indexes, views, etc on a remote machine directly. No SQL dump/execute files needed. You can synchronize structure remotely, etc as Steve says.

i just checked cnet. they have mysql lite for download. thank goodness i saved the original download so if i need for some reason to install again, i have a copy. i just have to make sure i don't lose it.

once you connect to the remote database withe server name, user name and password you do all those stuff from your local computer.

for synchronization i thought you set it up in mysql - well i have not done it so you may know more on that,.

publishing is just as easy dumping and executing- really painless.

ps: i think synchronization and replication are the same.. if so then it is mysql part, you set it up in mysql.

By "sync" Peter and I mean Navicat's abilty to synchronize database structure and/or data between two copies of the same database. Like I work on my local copy, the one my local Alpha app points to, then when ready to publish I need to make sure the remote copy has any changes I made in my local copy. We can "sync" the two copies with absolute ease; a couple mouse clicks. Any other program I have found makes that process much more difficult.

Just seen this thread. Have to concur Navicat all the way. Absolutely brilliant not jist for all the reasons stated but the ease in which you can build/test/build/test/build/test (you get the idea) pretty complex views/procedures/queries has saved me so much time!
