Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Install SSL Certificate

I am trying to install an SSL certificate with my application and am having trouble.

    Windows 2008 server
    IIS7
    on VPS on GoDaddy

I generated the CSR Request in WAS noting the key file that it put on my C: drive and saved the request text file.

I went to GoDaddy and requested the certificate using the Apache selection and saved the resulting two files to my VSP: rascalgp.org.crt, which I take as the certificate, and gd_bundle.crt which should be the intermediate file.

I went back to the WAS and put in what I could:
    • SSL Certificate File: I navigated to the rascalgp.org.crt file
    • Private Key File: I navigated to the private key file the WAS gave me when I got the CSR
    • Private Key Password: I put in the Private Key Passphrase that I used to generate the CSR. Is this right?
    • Certificate Chain File: I navigated to the gd_bundle.crt file that GoDaddy gave me
    • SSL Cipher List: I left this blank.

I saved the result and restarted the WAS.

When I went to the site thru my browser, I had a certificate error. I could get in by bypassing the error, but the error exists.

    Where did I go wrong?

    Thanks

    Mark

    Re: Install SSL Certificate

It sounds like you set it up properly. What exactly is the certificate error?

      Re: Install SSL Certificate

Thanks Lenny, for your quick input. When you asked exactly what the certificate error was, I went back to look. When I used the IP address, the error was because the "certificate was for a different website", which I interpreted as "for a website with the URL rascalgp.org". This was indeed an new error that I didn't see because of my 2 day odyssey of trying to make it work.

Then the real problem was that the URL pointer to the IP had gotten destroyed, so my URL wasn't even finding my machine. That is now fixed. What I now have is that https://www.rascalgp.org/ works like a charm but http://www.rascalgp.org/ gets lost. What I think I need to do is to put an index.html in the IIS (not covered by the security certificate) and forward the call to the https site covered by the certificate. Does this sound correct, or is there another way to get both the http and https calls work?

      Thanks for your help.

        Re: Install SSL Certificate

You will need to either run an additional Alpha instance on port 80 or use a different web server such as IIS. You may want to take a look at the thread regarding Abyss in the General Discussion area as well.

          Re: Install SSL Certificate

Thanks Lenny. Looking over other posts on that subject, I was almost up to the conclusion that another instance of Alpha server would be the most efficient way to resolve the problem.

          Thanks for the confirmation.
