Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Navigation System

    Hi All

I have a problem with my navigation system vertical toolbar.

I created this toolbar months ago and all is working fine live, the toolbar works exactly as it should.

The problem I have is that I now wish to add to this toolbar but when I try to edit it, the tree is blank with no items on it.

I am now too scared to make any changes to it in case I mess up the live toolbar.

Has anyone had this problem and if so do you perhaps have a solution so that I can edit this toolbar.

    Thank you

    Peter

    Hi Peter,

Make a duplicate first, that way you will still have the original if the new version does not work.

      Hi Keith

Thanks, I can just copy the A5WCMP file to another location?

Is there anyway to copy the file from the server to my development computer for me to work on, as even if I make a copy of the file it is blank and I would need to rebuild it from scratch.

      Thanks

      Peter

You should be able to download it with FTP.

Why do that, when you need to build a working version on your development machine first?

If by "server" you mean the published version of your navigation component, then I'm sorry but the answer to that question is absolutely NOT. That is probably why you have a blank navigation component already; you copied your published component over your development file.

General note, not saying it applies to you --> If you publish your project OVER your development files, or copy some or all of your published files to your development folder, components that are overwritten are hosed.

Thanks for the clarification Steve. I thought that was the case.

From what Peter said, "I am now too scared to make any changes to it in case I mess up the live toolbar.", he has not got as far as writing over the live toolbar. So he is safe there for now.

Best advice, test and test again on the development machine, before you publish to the server.

But can't the user restore a previous version of the component? Shouldn't that at least bring him back to where he was?

                Hi All

Thanks for the information and help

Seems like Steve is correct and the file may have been replaced by one from the published version.

Keith yes luckily the published version is still running so will not be replacing that until such time that I have rebuilt the component.

At least now I know what went wrong and won't be doing that again!

                Thanks again, much appreciated!

while i have not copied anything from the server yet, i like to know what happens when you publish a component or page to server. do they get changed to something else or something else is added to them. i am under the impression that the object when you publish to the remote server is the same. if for some reason your copy is corrupted you can copy from the server back to your development system and be done with it.
                  is that not true?

                    Re: Navigation System

The files that are published to the server are compiled which are readable by the A5 Server only.

                        Re: Navigation System

Note - A5W pages are plain text and minimally changed when published. You could use a published A5W page in development if you had to.

Should mention, you can sort of kind of use a published component (grid, dialog, etc.) for a development file (not a Navigation component!). For Grids almost everything will be missing, but some parts will be intact. In a total pinch, it can give you a starting point for re-constructing the component. I have done this twice on projects where the client only had the published version, not the development files.
