Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Set Control as readonly using Control Javascript Property

    Using the Control Javascript Property, it seems it would be possible to set a textarea ,for example, to read only.
    Has anyone used this for that purpose or something similar?

    My goal is to make a textarea control in a detail view ReadOnly, but I would like to know more about this property as well.

    Thanks.

    Re: Set Control as readonly using Control Javascript Property

    I discovered a way that seems to work quite nicely. I am using a detail view of a grid, with all readonly fields. But I have several that are quite long text fields that I wanted to be able to scroll if needed, so I changed them to "textarea" controls. But I did not want the user to be able to "edit" the text. (it really isn't editable, as changes are not saved, but still...)

    I discovered that in the Control Javascript you can use the following javascript code to make the text area read only:

    Code:
    document.getElementById("GRID1.D.V.R1.NAME").readOnly = true;
    'NAME' here is the name of the control. D means detail view. R1 means Row 1, (which is the only row in the detail view. and GRID1 is the name of the grid.

    In fact you can also put this code in the "afterdetailviewopen" client side event, and it seems to work the same.

    Hope this helps someone out.

      Re: Set Control as readonly using Control Javascript Property

      A common technique to make a field read-only is using the "Enable expression" property and entering "1=0" so that it always returns false. Also, you can use the {Grid.ControlId} placeholder instead of "GRID1.D.V.R1.NAME" when using Javascript in a field property. You don't have to know the control id name and you can reuse the code in another field property.

        You can also just leave the controls as Labels, and set their CSS property --- goes in "Label Properties > In-line style" for the Label field:

        Code:
        width:300px;
        height:200px;
        display:block;
        overflow:auto;

          Thanks for the additional information Dave and Sarah.

          Using the place holder is a great suggestion and works perfectly, remembering that in this case it needs to be in quotes as in:
          Code:
          document.getElementById("{Grid.ControlId}").readOnly = true;
          Of course, that component must also have a "readonly" property.

          Using the "enable expression" works somewhat, but grays out the text and disables any scroll bars.

          Using the "in-line" style also works but not quite in the way I wanted. In my case, if you didn't make it wide enough, it would contain horizontal scroll bars. And it is difficult to predict how many characters that field might have in it.

          But certainly both of those techniques have their place, and may work well in certain situations.

            I was going to point out this for you: http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/Alpha+...ore.JS+Library

            Also, Alpha Five defined $ as a replacement for document.getElementById. So that will help shorten up your code:

            Code:
            $("{Grid.ControlId}").readOnly = true;
            If you ever get into jQuery, it's doubly important to know about $ --- since it doesn't map to jQuery.

              And probably you want to replace those double quotes by single quotes although Alpha does a great job interpreting both correctly

                Thanks to all for the excellent advice...

                Thanks also for the link to the Alpha wiki article. I had not seen that one yet, and it looks very helpful.
