Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    web component in desktop

    hello

in some threads using the web component in desktop as the new desktop is mentioned.
to test i played around the concept. ( i have a very good web application using alpha5 v11 for my business using mysql and browser interface, which i do not plan on changing.)
i found out in my earlier stages, which is where i am in right now, it is easier with dbf as opposed to mysql. i am sure i will learn soon how to do with that also.
my question is, when the look and feel is like the web, why bother to design all those goodies and use it in local network
and the desktop? you might as well publish to the was and use it in more places than the local network alone.
yes - local network will need unlimited runtime only
yes - web will require was license and an isp, probably more expensive but can be reached from more places, not limiting to local computers with alphafive runtime installed.

so what will be the advantage of using web component in a desktop?
    thanks for reading

    Re: web component in desktop

The huge one for many is that using web components in a desktop does not require a WAS license. You can use the regular runtime. There are other issues as well as server, security, etc.

With due respect Gandhi, that is not the question.... the question is rather for what do you need a desktop application, and for what do you need a web application.
Since that determines whether you should do the one or the other. You do something for a reason, not just because you can.

So, there are reasons for wanting a desktop application instead of a web application like a possible situation where you do not have any users outside your office building for instance.
In that case, why would you make extra costs for a web server (hardware and software) if you only call upon your app from inside the LAN? There are many reasons for wanting a desktop application rather then a web application. And on top of that, what you don't have can't form a security risk as well.

So, the choice to make is: do I need a LAN desktop application or do I need a web application. Do I need intranet, extranet, internet.... or maybe even no *.net at all but just stand alone desktop?

Then, when that is decided, and you choose for a desktop application you would encounter the question: "What kind of desktop application do I need/want?". And that is where you ask yourself whether you want WCD (web components on Desktop) or Plain Desktop. One of the advantages of WCD is, that should you ever decide to need a web app anyway that it is almost done and you don't need to completely rebuild your app: it's already web capable in the core of the solution, you just need the WAS application server up and running and a few adjustments. Besides that obvious advantage, there are also other advantages like the "set-less design" that offers huge data-flexibility that you do not have (or only with great effort) on the "old desktop". WCD is very powerful, offers great stability and combines the best of two worlds. You will find that out now you are playing around with the concept I predict.

        you made me thinking..
I brought my browser experience to the current desktop experiment.

I think I have found an answer to myself since I have both runtime and was license, what if I build an application that is web capable and for any reason to use in desktop environment it will look exactly the same. so no one has to be re-educated in the user interface.

well, more experiment to learn more about this functionality.

        thanks.

We DO have a workgroup for this (see separate thread), where we exchange data/info on using WCD. If you like to be a part of that, send me a pm with your email address and I'll send you an invite.
