Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How many matches in this table?

How many matches in this table?

Fairly simple if long table and form. The form displays NHPC, a character field. I would like to also display How many records in the table have the same value for NHPC.

My guesses at the right words point to reports or groups, neither of which are involved. I seem to need a calculated field, but I don't know how to count matching records.

    Record_Count as N = A5_GET_RECORDS_IN_QUERY( Table_or_Set_Name as C, Filter_Expn as C [, Session_Handle as N [, Count_Child_Records as L ]] )

Yes, a calculated values field in the form is your goal. Allen's idea is solid. However, I'd try TABLECOUNT() first, mainly because I like all the examples in the help system for that function.

I can see how tablecount() would work, but I don't know how to say

tablecount("axs_log","GSUSA_no=the value of GSUSA_No in this record")

tablecount("axs_log.dbf","Gsusa_No='GS 0 2'") would only work when the value was GS 0 2. The Expression Builder shows a proper result of 18 for this one case.

Sandy, I've modified your example. Unzip the attachment and extract its files to an empty folder.

Xbasic contains the necessary statements to be able to get the current "color" from the object displaying it on the form. I use those statements when modifying your calc values expression. This has been tested with A5v9 but should run in a5v8 just fine.

            It works!

            tablecount("axs_log","Gsusa_No="+quote(parentform:Gsusa_No.text))

although I don't understand completely. Quote(stuff) Puts " around whatever is in the (). "stuff"
parentform:fieldname is the part I can never remember. Or maybe that's parentform:objectname. Those are usually the same.

So .text would be what appears in the field/object named? Would .value be different or just depend on whether the field was N or C?

              Sandy,

              Yes, its Objectname:Objectname.property

Notice that colons are used to delimit objects, and periods are used to delimit the property.

Parentform is the relative address of the form.

Gsusa_No must be the object name of the text box displaying the NHPC.

.Text is the text property of the GSUSA_NO object. It's always text. i.e. character data

.Value is also available. It's the data typed value being displayed in the object. Depending upon what the object is displaying it could be Character data, Numeric data, or Date data.

You can learn more about this by checking the help file topics on object addressing in Alpha Five.

Check the helps also for information on the QUOTE() function and the S_QUOTE() function. Both are handy tools in the developer's kit. You can explore how they do their stuff using the interactive window.
