Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    can you search web project files via XBasic?

    Essentially, I want to do an Edit > Search in all Web Project Files but from XBasic so I can process what's found.

    Any way to do that?

    TIA

    Re: can you search web project files via XBasic?

    Hi Chris,
    I'm doing something that may help you out. In a dialog's onDialogInitialize event I'm searching a folder (that's not even on the server but is mapped) for files that start with "06004" in this case (if you use my test line in working or live preview). The way I have it set up it saves them to the variable in the format of a pipe delimited list. I then populate a checkbox control with the file names and locations. I would think that you could use something similar.

    Code:
    dim filepath as c
    dim filesrc as c
    dim files as c

    if a5w_FlagWorkingPreviewOrPreview() = .T. then
    	'below filepath is for testing in working preview.
    	filepath = "P:\Secured\ReleasedPDF\Tooling\060\06004.pdf"
    else
    	'get filepath from grid
    	filepath = e.rtc._data.file_location
    end if

    filesrc = word(filepath,-1,chr(92))
    	filesrc = word(filesrc,1,chr(46))
    		filesrc = "P:\Secured\Tooling"+chr(92)+left(filesrc,3)+chr(92)+filesrc+"*.*"

    files = filefind.Get(filesrc,0,"N|PN")

    '---------- Set up variable to populate files to download checkbox list
    dim e.rtc.filechoices as c
    '---------- Populate the variable
    e.rtc.filechoices = files
    'debug(1)
    You could change the file search around to search for pretty much whatever you'd like I'd think; including webproject files.

      I really appreciate it. I need to search the contents of the file, though, and grid and new dialog components are binary files that I'm not going to be able to search like a normal text search...

        By "process" do you mean search all, and search and replace in A5W pages? I use a product named "Actual Search and Replace" for this. Like finding all session vars and then stripping all "__protected__" if found. I can't guess what other kind of processing you might do.

          I don't mean that but I could use that in a separate need. Thanks. I literally went through and got rid of all my "e.session" and "e.rv." references manually last week.

          I'm working on documenting my project better and built a simple database to hold the information about components, etc. But I'd like to have a relationship table that will let me see what components are related to other components. So for example, if I am making a change to a component or re-working it and imagining it's only called in one place but am forgetting three other places, I'll be able to see that easily.

            Re: can you search web project files via XBasic?

            An update and bump.

            I found a great little utility called Swiss File Knife that will search for a specified text string in binary files in a defined directory, which returns things accurately for the file but returns way way way too much. There is a whole lot of historical design information in an a5wcmp file that is fully ignored (as it should be) in the XBasic tab of the component when opened in Alpha.

            So again, in case someone else has thoughts, I'd really love to search via XBasic what Alpha Five would display as the XBasic for an open component.

            So for example, say I need to search for all web project files (a5w, a5wcmp) that make any use of column "Ind_DOB" and list these files. I can go to the Edit > Search in all Web Project Files and list the files, but I have to manually document my findings, and if I wanted to the search for column "Ind_Gender" I'd have to manually search for that column. I want to run something in XBasic code that will do the same thing but will return to me this list as a variable within my function so I can do something with the list programmatically.

            Anybody? TIA.
