Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

        Could you please tell me this .If the object-explorer shows no open object does it
        mean that there are no open hidden froms. If that is correct does that mean that the forms were closed along with their under lying tables.

        Thank you.

          Re: tables are left open

          Nick,

          I haven't tried what you are asking about. Instead, I rely on "workspace information", mentioned in an earlier post in this thread.

          During development sessions I often "compact" the database. If a table is unexpectedly open the "compact" routines alert me.

          These two things have served me well over the years.

          The only time I use the object explorer is when I have a form, browse, or other object open on purpose, doing design / development work.

            Re: tables are left open

            I just tested and if there is a form loaded (not viewed) it will show available in the Open Layout Windows dropdown in the Object Explorer (of another form). That tells me that all open layouts should be visible there.

            Note: You can get to the Workspace Information dialog at any time with

            a5_table_statistics()

              Stan,
              So does that mean if no obejct is open ,then my problem is not with closing the dialog but some thing less is wrong?
              Thank you

                Thanks Tom
                The "workspace information" is the best way to findout if a table is open but it does not show if a form is open but hidden.
                Thanks again.

                  Re: tables are left open

                  I thought the problem WAS one of tables remaining open unexpectedly ? If a form is open and hidden its supporting tables will be OPEN.

                    Re: tables are left open

                    The problem is tables being left open .it just that it was suggested that I must have an hidden form open .I am trying to eliminate that possibilty as a cause of tables being left open.

                      Ok.

                      Until we have a chance to study your application, and the sequence you follow to wind up with open tables, I have a couple more ideas for you.

                      1) Have you patched vers 11 to the latest build?

                      2) When you run the AlphaSports sample do you wind up with open tables ?

                          Good. Then it's likely something your app is doing... Or not doing.

                            I can't put my finger on the correct posts but I remember (hopefully this will jog some else's memory) something about temporary index files not getting deleted and causing alpha to think the table is in use or open.

                              What happens between these 2 lines (in red)?:
                              Code:
                              details=:form.load("cust_order_detailes","dialog","center","center")
                              details.baseQueryRun(query.filter,query.order)
                              details.refresh_layout()
                              [B][SIZE=2][COLOR="#FF0000"]details.show()
                              details.close()[/COLOR][/SIZE][/B]
                              Re-phrasing:
                              Does the user run any other scripts from the open form?

                                I tesed the from that is opened "Detailes.show)" by it s self (just opening it from the control panel).
                                When I open it that way after closing no tables are left open .so I figure the problem must be from the calling from.
