Default Web Application or Desktop Application? Which is better?

I have a complex project that will use a MySQL database as back-end. The database will be accessed by both web applications and desktop applications. I have already developed some desktop applications and then up-size them later. However, since desktop forms are based on dbf tables or sets, I realized that my forms will be using active link tables and sets after the up-size. As I understand, performance is better when the back-end is accessed directly. I am considering not to develop desktop applications anymore and make all applications as web applications. This approach however has advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, I think I cannot eliminate the use of active link tables because reports are based on dbf's or sets.

Following are my assumptions, I may be wrong.

Advantages of Desktop Application over Web Application
    1. Easier to develop.
    2. It can use shadow database to optimize performance. (I think this only affects the loading of the UI not the loading of data).
    3. Does not need a web server.
    4. Internet connection is not required.

Advantages of Web Application over Desktop Application
    1. Web applications can be accessed on desktops, tablets, and mobile devices with internet access ("write once, deploy all").
    2. Faster database access.
    3. Easier to maintain.

    Your comments or suggestions please.

If it is a complex app and you want to use the web, then I suspect you will need to be fairly fluent in java, sql, xml, html, etc.

    V11
you can design a web app and place the was on a server(using the was to power as needed) and access the app just like a web app, but on a lan.
Take that same app and install it on the web(another was for that) and access it anywhere
Advantage, only one app is written.

V12 - I don't know yet - It is supposed to be write once and access anywhere. It seems this would have to be positioned on the web.
Hopefully one of the beta tester will be able to say something about that.

1+1 seems to have a good price for windows hosting.

Read this thread to see what a couple of WCD enthusiasts have to say:

Indeed, this seems to be crying out for applying WCD technology ! With WCD, you would have it ALL. You could develop using web components with all its advantages, but still use shadowing and runtimes. Were you later in time asked to upgrade to a web application, this would be a snap and require no re-designing, you would have your app ready to "go web" extremely fast.
