Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How to show pdfs

    Hi Everyone,

    I am trying to show pdf files from a grid component in a desktop application, but I keep getting the error :
    .

    I know the path/filename is correct because if I copy it, then paste it into Run, it pulls up the pdf.

    My guess is the answer is simple for someone, but I'm choosing to ask while I still have hair.

    Thanks much,

    Gregg

    Did you get this fixed Greg?
    I suspect the string might be too long for the field - check the format - or the % signs are throwing it off.

    Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
    You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

      Re: How to show pdfs

      I did stumble onto a solution.
      I changed the onclick event from Action Javascript to text.
      On the Declarations - Global tab, Alpha5 uses urlencode().
      Getting rid of the urlencode() solved the problem.

        Hi Gregg,

        Thanks for this answer, but this is still not working for me.

        Here is my code. How do I remove the urlencode()? By that I mean, when I remove the urlencode and the parentheses, the function still doesn't work.

        Thanks.

        Code:
        window['{grid.componentName}_G__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1'] = function(rowNum,rowId,objEle) {

        window['{Grid.ComponentName}__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1'] = {grid.object}.createWindow('{grid.componentName}_WINDOW__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1','modal-url-resizable',{
        	height: '5in',
        	width: '8in',
        	title: {
        		html: 'Window',
        		location: 'top'
        	},
        	disableMove: false,
        	theme: '{grid.style}',
        	body: {
        		content: {
        			type: 'url',
        			url: '__workingMessage.a5w'
        		}
        	},
        	onHide: function() { $(this.getWindowId('body')).src = '__workingMessage.a5w';}
        }   );
        window['{Grid.ComponentName}__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1'].show();
        $(window['{Grid.ComponentName}__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1'].getWindowId('body')).src = ''+urlencode({grid.object}._getValue('G','EPDF',rowNum))+'';

        }

          Hi Charles,

          I wasn't able to test it, but try this code.
          Code:
          window['{grid.componentName}_G__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1'] = function(rowNum,rowId,objEle) {

          window['{Grid.ComponentName}__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1'] = {grid.object}.createWindow('{grid.componentName}_WINDOW__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1','modal-url-resizable',{
          	height: '5in',
          	width: '8in',
          	title: {
          		html: 'Window',
          		location: 'top'
          	},
          	disableMove: false,
          	theme: '{grid.style}',
          	body: {
          		content: {
          			type: 'url',
          			url: '__workingMessage.a5w'
          		}
          	},
          	onHide: function() { $(this.getWindowId('body')).src = '__workingMessage.a5w';}
          }   );
          window['{Grid.ComponentName}__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1'].show();
          $(window['{Grid.ComponentName}__UNBOUND_BUTTON_1_1'].getWindowId('body')).src = ''+{grid.object}._getValue('G','EPDF',rowNum)+'';

          }

            Thanks Greg. That's exactly what I tried during one of my iterations of this based on your suggestion. I still can't get it to work. You said it worked for you though. How did you do the file pathing in your table? I did mine as C:\employee_resumes\Amber_Jones.pdf

            Could the name be too long?

            Thanks.

              Charlie,
              I don't think the name is too long (what you're using is shorter than what I'm using).
              As I look at my stuff, I notice I gave up on complete javascript, and chose to use a little
              javascript in an xbasic function.

              During the almost year since I made that post, I may have changed something.
              The most noticeable thing I see is that I currently copy the file to the session.session_folder area.

                Re: How to show pdfs

                Got a message from Selwyn and Jerry Brightbill.

                I thought (mistakenly) that all I needed to do was to put any path I wanted into a character field and then point to that field. What I found out from them was that the directory folder with the pdf's in it, had to be in the Webroot. Also, I found out that you need to use the transform tool in the file upload button, to make the file path something that later can be read and/or accessed.

                At one point I thought I was going crazy, but it all makes sense now and is working properly. There is no need to modify the JS code in any way.

                Thanks to Selwyn and Jerry - who literally got back to me within hours on this help. It's what makes the product so great.

                  Re: How to show pdfs

                  That could explain why I couldn't get it to work using strictly javascript.
                  The ajax callback gave a neat little work-around.
                  Last but not least, while I appreciate the help we get from the people at AlphaSoftware,
                  I might question the speedy response considering this was started in May 2013 (Maybe things are going back to the way they used to be).

                    Re: How to show pdfs

                    In reading this I was getting a little excited. Only now no so much.

                    I have already created pdfs outside of the webroot. So how can you use a button to show pdfs outside of the webroot with our using javascript?
                    I am thinking xbasic but the onclick event is listed under the Javascript section??

                    Thanks,
