Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Compatibility with v11

I'm new to Alpha Five so please forgive me if I missed this information in another post. Last week I created some grids with v11 that worked quite well. This morning I loaded v12 and after backing up the workspace opened the v11 workspace from last week in v12. I didn't get any errors for requests to upgrade the workspace. However, when I open a "Working Preview" of any of the grids I get a "Script Error" (details below). Is v12 capable of running v11 web apps? Is there a conversion I need to run on the v11 webapp to make it v12 compatible. Thanks for the help.

    Script Error
    Line: 535
    Char: 1
    Error: 'A5' is undefined
    Code: 0
    URL: a5res:javascript/a5.js

    Re: Compatibility with v11

Hi Jeff, and welcome to Alpha. You should be able to open a grid created in V11 with V12 no problems. John Berry reported the same error, although in different circumstances in this thread, as Steve Workings points out it does not occur on his machine (nor mine). Just seems to be some kind of glitch, try re-installing V12 as the first step.

      Re: Compatibility with v11

I had both v11 and v12 installed so I uninstalled both and reinstalled v12 by itself. Still getting the same error. Any other suggestions? Since v12 is still Beta, is support available yet? Thanks

Jeff, what patch version are you using? I have 4054 1016 and I still get the same error messages.

Hmmm...therein may lie the problem. I downloaded what I thought was the latest version but I'll try again and post back.

              Thanks Jeff

All is well with the world. I somehow must have downloaded an older version of the patch, seems to be working now. Thanks.

                  Re: Compatibility with v11

Sometimes all you need to do when migrating stuff to a newer build is open your component, make it "dirty" (= edit some setting, save it, then re-edit the setting to it's original value) and save it.

                    Re: Compatibility with v11

I installed V12 this morning using download link sent with registration number from Alpha. I am getting the 'A5' is undefined script errors as well on a grid designed in V11, plus other 'undefined' script errors for every button or hyperlink in the grid. So...

SO, read messages in this thread.. went here: http://news.alphasoftware.com/v12pre...seNotesV12.htm .... downloaded and installed A5V12 BETA Full Version Patch. After it says it is successfully installed, I open v12 and click Help to Check for New Version. It says I have version 1016_4054. Tells me the most recent version is 1471_4136. So I click the 'To Download An Update, Please Click Here' hyperlink and end up back at the link above, so I close V12 and try download and install patch again, open V12 and it still says I have version 1016_4054.

I have tried changing a few things in the grid and saving, but still get the script errors. Mostly I think I need to know how to get latest build 1471_4136 to install.

                      Carol,

Did you close Alpha v12 before running the patch? If not: reboot your pc. Otherwise use this link: http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/a...full_patch.exe

Thanks for the suggestions, Frank. I had done all of what you suggest previously, including using the link you provided (which is farther down on the page for updates). Rebooted, etc... no luck. I guess I'm going to write to Alpha. Here is video I just created to send to them in case anyone is interested in errors I'm getting and my attempts to install the latest patch: http://screencast.com/t/c0QzsPM6

                          Carol,

It looks like you are trying to patch your v11 installation with the v12 patch. I saw your video and the icon top left is the b&w Alpha v11 icon not the v12 icon that should look like this v12.png Also I wonder if you did first download a the FULL VERSION of v12 ? It seems as if you only downloaded the full patch ? First download this, install it then download this & install

I ran the full_DL.exe FIRST from the download that Alpha sent me with the license, number, etc., but I'll go run it from the downloads page as you suggest, Frank.

Thanks, Frank! I guess the full_DL.exe that I downloaded from the link in the Alpha order email that they sent me a couple of days ago was not a good one. I just installed the full_DL.exe from their page and now I have the different icon AND the Help says I have the latest version AND the script errors went away. Now I can start playing with it! YAY!!!
