Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error Message - 20 User Maximum Reached

    Hello,

Today when logging into Alpha Web Server on our LAN connection I got an error message - "No more users can connect as maximum number already connected" - not the exact words but close.

Alpha web server is running on a Windows 7 PC.

I realize that you can only have 20 concurrent connections to shared folders on a Win 7 PC but I thought A5 was a way to overcome that. In fact it is the MAIN REASON I went with Alpha Five.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Hi Frank,

Any chance you can get an print screen of that message and post it?

I think the message is a windows message, not an Alpha message, so showing us what you're actually seeing will help to confirm.

    Thanks,

Re: Error Message - 20 User Maximum Reached

      Hello Earl,

When it happens again I will be able to get a print screen.

I searched for the message and I think this is it: "no more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept"

It shows up in red font and it appears in the tabbed user interface when a button is clicked to open a table.

And it is a windows message as I have seen it many times over the years when I was the 11th (pre Win 7) or 21st (after Win 7) person trying to access a shared folder on our network.

Are you using runtime as you can set max number of users at anyone time in that? Check Tool-> Utilities->throttle user account

The other problem is that the computers can that get the message may not have the proper startup.control file in the directory where you have the runtime files stored

I assumed runtime was only to do with desktop applications - am I wrong on this?

          This is a web application.

Re: Error Message - 20 User Maximum Reached

Runtime is a desktop thing. A windows server is sold on the basis of nodes(per connection). I believe 20 is the number on win 7. With the server editions of windows, it should be the same, unless they changed something.

            Look:
Prior to Windows 7, any Windows desktop version of operating system limited you to only allow up to 10 concurrent connections maximum, or only 5 in Vista Home Basic edition. Has this changed in Windows 7? Sure it does. With Windows 7, all editions support 20 concurrent connections for services such as File Services, Print Services, IIS, Internet Connection Sharing, and Telephony.
            you might try:
            1. Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit.exe in the Programs list. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
            2. Locate and then double-click the following registry key:
            HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\EnableConnectionRateLimiting
            3. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
            4. Exit Registry Editor.
            5. Restart the computer.
Remember the old setting in case you need to change it back and no guarantees.

              Well I'm confused now ?!?!?

Are you saying that if I have the A5 Web Application Server running on a Win 7 Pro PC that it will accept only 20 concurrent connections?

What earthly use would that be in a real world situation?

Re: Error Message - 20 User Maximum Reached

Alpha did not impose the 20 users(to my knowledge), windows did. I would be happy if I am wrong about it.

To my knowledge, all windows servers and many others also had a specified shared user limit and they don't care who the user is. If you place your app on a hosting service, that limitation is generally gone. I am positive it is gone with linux. I have a linux server here, but unfortunately, alpha won't go there.

Why not try what I said in the post and see if it works? If it works and you need it for an install somewhere, you can make it where you can transport it to another computer.

I'm sure it's a windows message - I've seen it many times over the years.

And as stated earlier it's the main reason I am trying to use Alpha Five - as I thought it would overcome that problem.

I do not have the registry key you mention

                  This part exists: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

                  This doesn't: EnableConnectionRateLimiting

Is it something I have to add myself?

Yes, you can add it yourself. However I do not believe this will resolve your issue.

Well what is the answer then?

What are other people doing who are using Alpha Five in Real World situations - i.e. - possibly hundreds of concurrent connections?

I do not know as I am not using the A5 App Server.

I am assuming that you are storing your data in DBF format and accessing it via a windows share either on a separate machine from your App server or on the same machine. If it is same machine refrain from having the App Server access the data via a Windows share connection. If it is a separate machine you could try converting the data to SQL.

However the error you are encountering is due to Microsoft licensing of the Operating System. The license limits a Windows 7 box to 20 concurrent connections. You could purchase a windows server OS and then purchase enough CALs to cover the number of connections you will be receiving over the windows share. This would quickly become cost prohibitive.

The only time Windows will impose this limit is when your connection authenticates to the windows box, eliminate the Windows authentication and you will bypass the connection limit (hint: SQL or local access will eliminate the Windows Authentication)

The registry changes modify the configuration of the TCP/IP protocol. IP is at layer 3 (Network Layer) and TCP is at layer 4 (Transport Layer) of the OSI layer. In this situation the limit is being imposed by the Operating system at Layer 7 (Application Layer). Hence why I do not believe these changes will result in a fix of the current situation.

Course this is all assuming that the issue is user license count.
