Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Question about SQL

I am interested in writing a new database using SQL as the back end, with Alpha. Do I write the database in Alpha or SQl first? Which is the easiest way to convert?

What is the easiest software to use to construct the SQL databases?

This is a new venture for me Thanks for any help

    Re: Question about SQL

To create a SQL database you will need to have some form of a SQL database system installed on your computer. There are literally dozens out there, including free versions MySQL, SQL Server Express, Firebird just to name a few. Generally the easiest way is to create the database, tables and fields/columns using some a data management studio for the product you are using. SQL Server Express comes with such tools. The others have a variety of products that perform similar functions. Once you have created the database you will need to create a new Alpha Five application and connect to your data.

Another way would be to create the database in Alpha Five and then use the upsize genie to migrate it to SQL. I have not used this process so I cannot tell you how well it works. Again I will assume to upgrade the native .dbf you will still need to the appropriate SQL database system installed on your computer.

There will likely be other suggestions. Good luck with the project.

      Re: Question about SQL

I'd say the steps would be this:
      1) Download and install the SQL database of your choice (MS SQL Server and MySQL are probably the two most common in the Alpha community--there are numerous forum threads comparing these and others if you want to look at them).
      2) Download and install a SQL administration/design tool. This will depend on your server choice, but for MS SQL Server, most use SQL Management Studio (which I believe is an optional install during the regular installation), and for MySQL, the most common are SQLYog, Navicat, MySQL workbench.
      3) Create a database and build the tables in the design tool. They are all pretty user-friendly in terms of things like right-click to create New Table, etc.
      4) Get into Alpha Five and set up your connection string so Alpha knows how to interact with it.
      5) Build Alpha Five components based on the tables in the database.

For the first three, there's plenty of online resources about these databases and related tools; for the last two, there's a good bit of documentation and forum threads.

Debora, one of the benefits of developing the tables in Alpha and then upsizing is that you can fiddle around with the table structures and create sample views very easily in Alpha. Once the tables are to your liking, you can upsize.
The downside is that things like Field Rules don't translate.
Still, once you have the SQL Db in place, it's easy to use the WAS side to handle the data.

If you use MySQL, have a look at the free software - TOAD as it runs beautifully with Alpha open at the same time. That way you can build and test on one screen and don't need to keep swapping.
