Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Activating A5v7.

Given that the v7 forum is almost deceased, I was wondering if anyone here has a clue about how I can re-activate my v7 - I've replaced a HDD after a crash and have no record of either the original activation code or the previous computer name.

I've asked support, their response (after 3 days..) was "update to the new version, we can give you a great price." I don't want the new version, as this db only gets used once a year and doesn't need all the new bells and whistles anyway, that level of support doesn't deserve my money, and from what I read, Alpha Software is moribund anyway, so I'm not giving them more of my money.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.
    Rob.

    Hi Rob

Firstly I would hardly call Alpha Software as "Moribund" anyway, this may not help but I have always kept copies of licence emails from alpha in pdf format away from the main drive (and actually printed out) These include the download links for the product which still work (just tried it for my v7 license) I would suggest phoning customer services to ask for your licence info.

I would suggest emailing customer support to have them deactivate the installation on any machines using your license number.

Then I would follow the original process for activating an installation.

        Rob,

AS is definitely not "moribund". They are merely attempting a new pricing model.

As recently as last year (before I made the jump to A5V11), I needed to re-install my A5V7.

It was quick and easy ... I called customer service, told them I did not want to upgrade, gave them my machine name and my email address and they emailed me the activation key.

I had a similar experience as Paul did. Phone call and all was fixed.

            Re: Activating A5v7.

Thanks all for the advice. Sadly, phoning them isn't an option for me, I'm in Australia, and I have tried the email option. 3 days to reply, then a 'buy the new version' reply. Not very helpful, I'm afraid.

I have the d/l link, that works. It's the activation side of it that doesn't. Never mind, I'll run it in demo mode for it's annual use next month, then look elsewhere.

As for their new pricing model. I don't use A5 often enough to justify that sort of expense, so they have lost me as an upgrader. Just like Adobe did. Ah well.

            Thanks again.
            Rob.

              I've asked support, their response.......
You don't say what you asked them. Email them requesting they reset the activations on your license to 0.

                  Rob,

Try James Andrews at AS. These were the two emails I got from him when needing to re-install/re-activate A5V7. ...

(If you don't have your license number, you can also get that from AS).

                  Good luck!

Hello there. To send your activation code to you I need to get your license number and machine name from you. Both of these pieces of information can be seen in the "Help->About Alpha Five" box in the application. Thank you for choosing Alpha.

                    Re: Activating A5v7.

I must correct myself. I have done Alpha a dis-service. The email I received was actually addressed to someone else - the someone else was the one told to 'buy a new version.' I didn't expect that, so didn't pick up on it at the time. I am still waiting for a reply that will help me, and it's going on a week now. Well done Alpha.

All I was asked for was which version of Windows I was running, then a couple of days later, the misaddressed email arrived. Never mind.

Nope. Nothing since I replied to their last, incorrectly addressed email, nearly a week ago. I'll admit to being not very complimentary, but I don't think I was rude. I guess they're not interested unless I'm going to spend money.

                              Rob,

Try emailing James, whose details I listed above.

If not, if you want to email me your licence info, I will call them for you ... at least to get a ball rolling. (I'm only an hour behind Boston time).

I have never had a problem with AS and reactivation of software, so something is not right.
