Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Simple Question about forms, but stumped

    I am working with a form where I run a button script to open another form on top of the form and want to lock in focus on the form and not allow them to switch to any other portion of the program. In MS Access you just turn on Modal and Popup and you are locked on the form while it is open

    Can you do this in A5. I thougth I saw this in all the videos that i watched, but cant remember. I did not see any options in the form properties.

    See if opening the 2nd form as a dialog form (modal) doesn't do what you want. If you are using Action Scripting to open the form, opening as a Dialog should one of the options. By the way, this also gives lots of other things you can do--check the documentation.

      Hi Keith,

      If the second form is to be used only as a pop up, then save it as dialog, as well as Raymond's suggestion.

        Here is an example.
        form.load("SetupWizard","dialog","","center","middle")
        SetupWizard.Activate()
        SetupWizard.Show()
        form.close()
        Notice I end the code with form.close(). You must do this from the calling routine because when you close a dialog form it does not actually close; it is hidden only and stays in memory. The form.close() on the calling script will actually close the form.

          Re: Simple Question about forms, but stumped

          Filepro, I am not quite sure exactly what you want here, but as I suggested in my post above, I really think you should peruse the documentation to learn all the ins and outs of opening forms. For example, simply opening a form via Action Scripting as a Dialog would produce the following code:
          Code:
          DIM Shared varP_RW_Params_frm as P
          DIM layout_name as c
          layout_name = "RW Params frm"
          varP_RW_Params_frm = :Form.view(layout_name,"dialog")

          'After the user closes the dialog form, the form remains in memory and the script
          'continues with the next command.

          'You can insert any code here that you want to execute before the dialog form (which is now
          'hidden) is removed from memory with the .close() command.
          'The code that you insert here can refer to the form using the pointer variable, varP_RW_Params_frm

          if is_object(varP_RW_Params_frm) = .t. then
          	varP_RW_Params_frm.close()
          end if
          Note that closing the dialog does not actually remove it from memory, so you have do that in the calling action, and before doing that your script could do other things too, as noted in the example above.

          The above example uses Form.View() but as Natn1252 noted, there is also Form.Load() in which the form has to be activated (which is not necessary for Form.View()). But with Form.Load() an optional parameter also provides for either a Dialog or a Popup option:
          For Form.Load(), one optional parameter gives you both Dialog and Popup options:
          "Popup" = Open the form as a popup window.
          "Dialog"= Open the form as a modal dialog box.

          If a form is opened using the "Popup" style, the following rules apply:
          Xbasic does not pause, as it does in the case of "Dialog" style.
          The window can be moved outside of the Alpha Five frame.
          Alpha Five menus are not active (just like "Dialog" style).
          The window is not modal. (unlike "Dialog" style).
          The window is always on top of all other Alpha Five windows.
          There is much more to learn on this subject, depending on what you need/want to do. Again, studying the documentation, as dense as that sometimes is, would be good advice.

            in the to be opened form
            set the left and top to inches - then .3 and .3
            in the width and height, set as apporopriate
            set sizeable ONLY and give a form name.

            Be sure the underlying form is on activate - set to maximize or whatever you need.

            This is not setting anything to modal or any other settings. Mine are set to modeless and continue to be. see pic
