Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    App Server Shutting Down

I have Alpha v11 build 3381-4096 running on a hosted server with Windows 2008 server.
I must point out that this is not hosted with ZebraHost.
The application server shuts down from time to time with no apparent consistency.
The following message exists in the a5w_error.log for each shutdown.

[Wed May 29 22:24:26 2013] [Startup Failed] Exception executing XBasic instruction.
[Wed May 29 22:24:28 2013] [shutdown] Server is shutting down.
[Wed May 29 23:06:59 2013] [startup] Alpha Five Application Server/11.0 Build/3381-4096 has started and is using processor 1 for Xbasic.
In the event of a server crash, a dump file named A5ApplicationServer.dmp will be created in one of the following locations:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\a5V11 ApplicationServer
    C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\2
    C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Alpha Software\Alpha Five Application Server Version 11
**** An existing dump file is already located at C:\Users\ADMINI~1\AppData\Local\Temp\2\A5ApplicationServer.dmp

A dump file exists in the above directory, but is backdated to 05/09. No dump file exists for 05/29.

1- Does Alpha have a list of server requirements/ server configuration requirements?
2- Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: App Server Shutting Down

I would enable xbasic logging on your server to see what is going on where.

          Re: App Server Shutting Down

What happens if you start with an empty webroot folder ? (rename the existing one & recreate an empty one, then restart your server)

You could also try to patch with the latest prerelease; those are pretty stable so I see little risk. Download from http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/A...easenotes.html

            Re: App Server Shutting Down

Created a new empty webroot folder, re-published project and restarted app server. This did not resolve the issue.

Installed the latest prelease patches and so far the application server has not shutdown since.
That is either a result of the issue being resolved or the condition that has been forcing a shutdown has not yet been met yet.

I will post again in a couple of days with the result.
