Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

how to recover a previous version of a report from backup?

Today I was fine tuning a report of mine.. As usually happens, after last edit, save, publish (it is a webapp, but since report are on the desktop control panel I posted it here) and run I noticed I completely lost footer (two text boxes, of which one dinamically populated, plus a pair of fields.
With reference to the attached image
    backups.jpg
    1. you can see the report i need back: Rep_RichiestaBrevetto
    2. In the project folder there is not any filename with rep_richiesta*.* name
    3. in the <projectfolder>\backup\sets\<nameofmyset>\Report\ there's a list of zip files,
    4. ..each one containing Rep_RichiesteBrevetto.a5bak

BUT no other instance of Rep_RichiesteBrevetto.* in the computer folders

I tried to extract the a5bak file from the 15th zip file, looked inside with a text editor and verified it contains my lost section. But don't know where to put it for substituting the current, incomplete report

    5. Also have a lot of previous backup onto a dropbox folder, should it be of any help

Right click on the report name in the control panel. If a prior version is available the last item in the right click menu will be Restore Prior Version.
    There can be only one.

      Great! Thank you very much.
As you see I lost a lot of time editing and attaching my post with all data I have..
Should I knew you already answered...
      Got my previous version back..

Only for my curiosity, where is this report stored? Into some kind of AEX file?
Should I want to publish a new version of such a report, how do I have to proceed? Until now I republished "all files"
      Thank you again

        path to your database \backup\Tables\tablename_upon_which_report_is_based\Report\
        or
        path to your database \backup\Sets\setname_upon_which_report_is_based\Report\
        There can be only one.

That's the backup. And there are only zip files with my report inside. nothing with that name outside.

I meant the actual report.. because I can't se any Rep_RichiestaBrevetto.<anything> anywhere (that's the name of my actual report)

Reports aren't stored as separate files. Nor are any other layouts. See the documentation for Alpha Five File Types.

            Data Dictionary
            .DDD
The table's data dictionary, which contains lists of additional table objects such as Layouts (forms, browses, etc.), report designs, saved operations, field rules, and field names longer than 10 characters.
Dictionary Methods, Reading From and Writing To the Data Dictionary

            .DDM
Stores additional table objects such as Layouts (forms, browses, etc.), report designs, and saved operations in memo format.

            .DDX
Contains the dictionary's index(es). Alpha Five uses the .ddx to find a specific form name or field rule or whatever is needed.

            .DBP
Contains the definition for an active-link table? or mapped table.
            There can be only one.

the older versions are stored as zipfiles and alpha unzips them when you want to revert to older version.
to see the location and to actually see the zipped file of your report:

look into the place of your workspace/database/backup/library/database/report.
              to get there easily
right click on a report, select the last item on the pop up dialog- restore to prior version
then another dialog will pop up with all the prior versions. on that dialog look at the bottom there is a blue link that says open in the folder or something - click on that.
the folder i mentioned above will materialize.
and you will see your report listed as a zip file.
              thanks for reading
