Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    MySQL or SQL Server

I have had a small amount of experience using MySQL and some experience of using SQL Server. I have had a lot of experience developing desktop applications with MS Access and VBA. As I move to Alpha Five web development I want to either adopt MySQL or SQL Server as a backend database (instead of Access). Initially I will be developing systems for 10-20 users. I also want to keep my costs down to start with. Which backend database would people advise me to adopt and why? Given that I know virtually nothing about using them with Alpha Five, are there any tips or tools that would be worth knowing about? Many thanks in anticipation. David.

    Hi David

My own personal preference having used both extensively is MS SQL Server. Most can be achieved using sql express particularly at the level you are considering. Both work well with Alpha so I guess it will come down to personal preference.

I love MS SQL. Plus if your product grows (Like 200 users) you can upgrade with a license.

Thanks for these comments. Are there any advantages to MySQL?

I use MySQL because I prefer opensource platforms like Linux, Android, etc. For any app that alpha five can handle either will be fine.

I find either works great as typical web databases, although MS SQL can offer way, way more (if you need it, that is). MySQL is not very good for heavy administrative tasks, but is simple and fine for web DBs. For smaller intranet stuff, MS Access (JET) works fine as well. MS SQL also allows an easier migration from Access, and if this was your previous experience, then I would recommend MS SQL Express. Also, I tend to use DB views in some instances, and MySQL is not very good with these (performance-wise).

If MS Access (JET) works OK, what are the reasons for using MySQL or SQL Server in preference? Security? Support for multiple users?

Exactly. For an app with typically less that say 10 concurrent users, Access is fine. I use it in an intranet application and it works great.
Make sure and code properly - open your DB connection, get your data and close it quickly. Heavy traffic will eventually cause it to slow down to unacceptable levels, so know your target viewership.
