Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Create multiple PDF's

    Client has 117,000 case notes in an Oracle Db.
    Each case note can be exported as a PDF from a button click on the case note screen.

    What I would like to do;
    Cycle through the 117k records and create the PDF for each. I do not want to print them and I need to store them in a certain folder. The naming convention is simple.
    P123456_Assessment
    P123457_Assessment etc.

    The folder will be imported into an EDMS application using the names above.
    Client uses Cute PDF usually, but I can link to the Db and use the Alpha PDF facility.

    Anyone done anything like this?

    Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.

    Re: Create multiple PDF's

    Seems it has been discussed before. All you need to do is loop through the records, do a report.saveas() filtering for the current record, filename to save as based on some field in the current record.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Create multiple PDF's

      I looked but obviously with iffy criteria.
      Thanks Stan, just never done it myself but the process should be that simple.
      When I was looking at the PDF in Adobe, I didn't have the option to print to a file so that's what prompted me to post.
      If I am allowed to use Alpha all will be well. If not, then it's on to plan "b".

        Ted,

        I am doing this with several types of reports that need to be stored as PDF in client related folders.
        Let me know if you need any assistance and I could create an example for you.

                Re: Create multiple PDF's

                I did this for a client whose clients each wanted a report specific to their location.

                I would loop through the file and build the report saving each as a separate PDF.

                Hope it helps.

                Code:
                repset = set.open("reports")
                tbl = table.get("conditions")
                tbl2 = table.get("clients")
                tbl2.index_primary_put("Location")
                'goto skipit2
                f1.write_line("Begin Build of Reports at "+time("h:0mAM")+" on "+date_format(date(),"Mon-d-yyyy"))
                email_msg = email_msg + crlf()+"Begin Build of Reports at "+time("h:0mAM")+" on "+date_format(date(),"Mon-d-yyyy")
                dim J as N
                Dim loc as C = ""
                DIM loc1 as C = ""
                J=0

                'PleaseWait(.T.,"Building Reports...")
                REPSET.fetch_first()
                loc = tbl.Location
                loc2 = tbl2.Report_Hdr
                while .not.REPSET.fetch_eof()
                	if tbl2.Report_Hdr <>""
                		loc1 = tbl2.Report_Hdr
                	  else
                	  	loc1 = tbl.location
                	end if

                	if exist(padr(trim(tbl2.location),35," "),"conditions","Location")
                		pdf_filename = "C:\Forecast\reports"+chr(92)+trim(loc1)+"_Pavement_forecast.pdf"
                		if file_exists(pdf_filename)
                			file_remove(pdf_filename)
                		end if
                		filt1 = "location="+quote(trim(tbl2.Location))+".and. report_hdr = "+quote(loc2)
                		query.filter = filt1
                		query.order = ""
                		'report.preview("Condition Letters",query.filter,query.order)
                		report.SaveAs("Condition Letters","PDF",query.filter,query.order,pdf_filename)
                	end if
                	repset.fetch_next()
                	while tbl.Location = loc .and. tbl2.report_hdr = loc2  .and. .not.REPSET.fetch_eof()
                		repset.fetch_next()
                	end while
                	loc = tbl.Location
                	loc2 = tbl2.report_hdr
                	J=J+1
                end while

                repset.close()
                'tbl2.close()
                'tbl.close()
                After building the reports, we would then loop through the Clients table and generate an e-mail with the appropriate report for the client attached.

                Typically, there were between 120 and 150 reports and e-mails generated at each run which happened 4 times daily.

                  Thanks Tom and Stan.
                  The problem will be that the Db is highly normalised and uses matrix dynamic questionnare which is around 12 50, and with 12 tables of questions and answers so it's complex to say the least. Current thinking is to get a Robot Macro to cycle through the client records and press the button. There are around 5 mill key presses so it will be a long job over a network. The software ACTUATE has the reports I need but the dev license is 20K I believe.
                  Not finished looking at the options so I might be bending yours and Jo's earholes in a while. Just found out I have the next phase of the job -another 6 to 8 months earning money. So turkey for Christmas might be a possible.
