Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Sorting negative numbers do not sort right

I am producing a ranking report with values from high to low, of course the low number will be negative(-450.00 -600.00 -0.50 -3.00 and so on). They are numeric fields and they are not calculated fields.
The positive number sorts perfectly, not the negatives as they show in a erratic way.
I saw this mentioned back in 2004 and it was said to be reported to Mr Selwyn.
    No further details after.
I tried some of the workarounds mentioned in another thread, but still reports inacurately.
    Any advice?

    Hi, Mike.

As usual sample data would permit us to confirm your observations and possibly spot things you may be overlooking.

Re: Sorting negative numbers do not sort right

The way I get around this type of issue is to have a large numeric calculated field in the table record that holds the result of the maximum largest number that could result (say 99999999) less the value of the actual rank field. I then include the calculated field in my ranking index descending or ascending depending on the report sequence I want.

I am not seeing this behavior nor heard of such an issue.
Are these numbers in a field in a table?

Re: Sorting negative numbers do not sort right

              I can confirm this behavior.

Attached is a table with about 7000 random numbers from -250.0000 to +250.00000

There are three simple reports, one sorted in ascending order - this one does not work, it shows the values in record order.

Second report is descending, this works as expected.

Third is with the order set as str(value), this works - it sorts the list in ascending value.

I tried this indexed and non-indexed, same result either way.

Unless I'm missing something really obvious (wouldn't be the first time), it does seem like a bug.

Experimenting with this a little more it seems the bug only appears when the decimal specification is greater than zero.

                  Works fine in v8.
Unable to open your reports, but the sorting works fine in the table.

Table sorting works fine, it's the reports that aren't sorting correctly.

Jacobs description is correct, That is what I get.
Tha table sorting is correct. As Alpha sorts numeric in the table. In the reports is OK. It must convert the numbers to character, I think.
I tried to post a simple sample, but I am having problems posting zip filess

Yes. I see that behavior and it looks like a bug but I do not have v11 to test.

This problem is not new, as it was reported in 2004

                          http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...rting+negative

So your version must have the same results in reports. If not, them we need to know why?

                          Thanks for looking into this.

                            Mike,

I submitted a formal bug report and have received word that this has been addressed. I'm told the fix will be in the next prerelease build.

meaning that it will be for V12, not for V11?
