Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: acessing desktop app remotely

I have dropbox set up on my laptop PC and main desktop PC. If I am working on either PC I believe a script that eventually runs the shutdown of the PC (say 20 min delay) preceded by automated copying of specific work folders and their content to their counterpart dropbox folders should do the trick.

Only when you are the sole user and you take care, make no changes on the other side before the 20 minutes update completes.
Maybe easier to network or use a crossover cable and update the lot.

        Re: acessing desktop app remotely

You can do the same by placing the whole app on a web site(host) on anyplatform. say a 5.00 a month. ftp the app files down, do the work and ftp back up. No problem.
As Ray said. works for one person only with safety.

I have worked with my files on a ubntu local server, but have not quite figured out how to do it with a linux host account yet. Thought I had it, but it was wrong.

            Re: acessing desktop app remotely

Talk about taking care, I completely forgot about the period of time necessary for synching dropbox files on the reciprocal PC and somehow copying to the relevant work folders before working with them. So, scrub that not thought out idea

This is an example of an inexpensive way of achieving your requirement :)

Maybe I'm being obtuse, but I dont see how that achieves the requirement.
Unless to use to upload download as Dave already mentioned. You can't run desktop app from that host.

but then if you are one person you will have the opportunity to have your n/b with you when you are at your d/t and just copy the files across before you depart.

                  Re: acessing desktop app remotely

Set up your Alpha application on the VPS and use Remote Desktop wherever you are in the world to work as normal. Of course, I have not read the thread completely through, so I may be going off at a tangent here.
Just trying to be helpful :)

BTW from memory I think Windows RDC permits local printing- could be wrong though

                      Paul,
Please explain in non technical terms how I would use this service:
                      http://www.ucvhost.com/VPS/Windows-H...s-Hyper-V.aspx
I upload the folder with the app to that service. Do I then use my local runtimes to connect?

                        Re: acessing desktop app remotely

Josh, that is a question I cannot answer.
Personally, I don't need/have the original posts type of requirement, I use dropbox and manage my rare remote access requirements that way.
Alternatively, if I am away from my PC for only a few days, I leave my main desktop PC on and use a service such as gotomeeting or teamviewer.
I suggested the VPS route because the original question was about centralised/global access for personal services where a dedicated user-owned repository is not an option, and I think my suggested solution could satisfy this requirement, albeit at a small cost.
That said, I have no specific recommendation, you would need to do your homework and decide for yourself. The link I provided was an example. There are many out there. Take a look and ask the support and sales people for the ones that interest you your specific questions. :)

                          Re: acessing desktop app remotely

Josh, this type of service affords you essentially your own remote PC, which is effectively 99.99% available (re. up time).
So (assuming you opt for a Widows version) you can install Alpha the same as you would on your local PC.
You can then run your application as normal through 'Remote Desktop Connection' - take a look at the option under the Accessories folder from the Windows start menu.
You can find out all the other stuff by googling.

                          Paul

                          Footnote:

If the possible minor delays in using a remote connection from your normal place of work was an issue, you would of course work locally and ensure that the remote (VPS) data and possibly latest version of the application folders were updated with the relevant latest files before having to use the remote user facility in real time. Likewise when you return to your normal place of work you would need to synchronize the data back to your workplace PC. Personally, in this day and age I do not find any speed issues when working remotely.

do this search on google? I think you can set this up just like a local server? May be wrong, never had the need.
