Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    v12. I am sure it's me. BUT....

Maybe SOMEONE AT ALPHA's could finally make a clear list on WHAT v12 has to offer as opposed to v11 clearly divided into the sections Desktop Old, Desktop WCD, Web and Mobile ?
Since I really have no clue why I should upgrade to v12.

Yes, there have been numerous threads here, and yes, there has been a beta install. I tried that but apparently Alpha sent me the wrong install link since I got a link for v12 (saying it was v12) but it appeared to be v11 instead and instantly messed up my complete v11 installation. Result was, that I needed to re-install my v11 installation after the brief v12 walkaround and immediately removed everything not v11 from that machine. Besides, using a beta can't give you clear overview in that limited time that you use it.

I simply think that there should be a feature list (A COMPLETE ONE) nicely divided in the sections named, versions side by side, so every potential v12 customer can see what he has to gain by upgrading.
EXACTLY. Not just "it adds mobile". Or a bunch of videos on new features. One would like to have an OVERVIEW on it all.

For instance: I want to know what webcomponents are added that I can use on the desktop for WCD applications. I doubt anyone on this forum knows the complete answer to that (understandably). Others may feel the same about the web department, or old desktop.

I know there is a lot of hassle (right word?) about the licensing structure and proprietary application server vendor-lock-in, which would all be the HOW side of the question, but I think the WHAT side of the question is just as important. WHAT am I going to buy (if...)

    So, Alpha People:

Would you PLEASE be so kind and offer a complete and specified list of differences between v12 and v11 so that I (and I would guess many others) have a clear understanding about what v12 can do for me what v11 can't in these sections (so not just everything on one pile, but divided for desktop, wcd, web and mobile).

Off on a bit of a tangent...
Here is the dumb question of the week,
As a recent convert to A5 and only using web/ mobile, can someone tell me what WCD Desktop means? What does WCD stand for? I understand Alpha has Desktop development (it roots, I know) and since V9 or so, Web and now in V12/AA has Mobile. What I don't understand what "WCD Desktop" is Vs "Desktop Old".

    Thanks in advance

It means the option of running WEBcomponents at the Desktop without Webapplication Server i.a.w. WebStandalone but not sure all the websecurity feature work in a standslone, ask Marcel he is the Godfather of WCD.

        :-) Eric.....

Indeed, WCD stands for Web Components Desktop. It is a system where you only use webcomponents to create a desktop application. So, without any forms in it. It can run without the WAS or AS thanks to the "Working Preview"-mode that has been implemented by Alpha. You can't use the web security features since you are not on the web. The standard desktop security system works for WCD. WCD is the hybrid animal that lives on the desktop but its' "parents" are from the web: you use the extremely powerful web components to build your desktop application. Once you have tried it, you are hooked forever and probably won't want to look at the good 'ol forms anymore. I think it's awesome technology!

WOW! OK, that IS interesting. as I use A5 fro Web development but still use Access for my desktop projects. Mostly because it works well enough and I can't be bothered learning A5 Desktop, I didn't see the point as I know Access / VBA like the back of my hand and after 18 years developing in Access ... you can't teach old dogs new tricks... But now you have me intrigued with the WCD since I am getting up to speed with A5 Web stuff.

          Thanks for the info!

Re: v12. I am sure it's me. BUT....

It indeed is. It means you can create your desktop apps with almost the same tooling as your web apps (there are a few do's and don'ts). Any desktop app you might have created using WCD you can take to the web anytime you want with almost no extra work since all you need is already there basically. For you personally it would mean that you only had need for 1 tool and could kiss Access Goodbye since there is really NO WAY that Access could deliver the same raw desktop power that WCD can. WCD really is where Alpha Five's desktop future lies. I am sure when the few hiccups we still have in creating full blown WCD apps are addressed, WCD can kick any competitive desktop product from their sockets. The hiccups are not blocking, but if addressed the process would be even more smooth. Just search this forum for WCD and you will find several interesting threads.

i asked the following on a separate thread no answer at all, so i am asking here since it deals with wcd, somewhat or the thread is going there from original intent:

can you print pdf from a button on the tabbed_ui i know i can from the grid?
can show images on a grid?
              can you display html pages?

all these seem to work without any problem on the webside when you publish. i am not able to do the same with wcd on the desktop

Not straight away. Since you probably will need to ask the user some parameters anyway (like a date range or something) the solution to this problem is to put a button on the TUI that opens a dialogcomponent (a very tiny one) that has the button to open the PDF and can ask the user for the desired parameters as well. Works like a charm since it allows to use "arguments". The use of the argument-technology has great advantages as opposed to using variables.
can show images on a grid?
Yes, you can. Question is where in the grid. You can use images on the TUI home tab now. That's a matter of defining the path in the correct manner.
                        can you display html pages?
I don't know that. I did not have the need to do that until now. I would think not, but that you would have to test.

Hey Bruce don't sweat about it. The guys at Alpha's are smart people and my post is more a question than a discussion viewpoint. So it does not matter much that the thread is going an other way a bit. The question still stands. Maybe Alpha thinks it is a good idea, than such a list will probably follow soon.

I am so queries about building a desktop application and I been digging many places and only found some older videos about it and couldn’t get the full picture/setup how to build that.
I am comfortable building web application, NOW I am dreaming about desktop Application.
If there is any video tutorial am willing to pay, as long as it is affordable.

take a look at your horsebase wcd and the homepage that says start. wouldn't you like some nifty html page displayed about your program or the company instead of being blank?
that's where the html page will go.

what if you just wanted to print
a list of all the horses in your stable,
a list of races where your horses ran
a list of trophies your stable or horses won
normally you will put some button on the tabbed_ui then you will just print. i tired, it did not work.
hopefully we will find a mechanism to print report from a button.
