Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Plan to work with web and desktop

I have decided to convert my current application to run entirely on the web using a mysql backend. One question, is it doable to use the same components on the web for mobile and desktop browser use, or do you have to develop separate components for the desktop.
Also, thinking about my question above about reports, I guess most of what I want, say, like a customer list, or an invoice, can simply be handled by printing the display on the screen, so in my case that would probably suffice for most "reports".

Richard if you would like one of developers to touch base with you and provide you with some overall advices - please email me at [email protected]
Re your question about using the component for mobile and desktop browser use? The answer to that is YES. That in fact is a fundamental premise of Alpha Anywhere (Alpha Five v12)

This brand new video may be worth watching http://vimeo.com/69909140

Another video that may be worth watching is this one http://www.screencast.com/t/Dqkm2m7fs It was posted by David Kates who is a talented developer using Alpha and active on this board. This video is of the new "app launcher" component in v12 which detects what browser your app is being accessed from (desktop browser, mobile browser - android, iphone, ipad etc) and then servers up the appropriate information from the server. But in all cases it is the same core component at work.

When I export all of my dbf files to mysql, and then do the development work with this data, when I want to go live, how do I export the more recent live data? Does the export genie handle that, or will I have to update the records some other way?

This was answered recently in another thread. Do a search on MySql.

Re: Plan to work with web and desktop

After working some with list controls and the UX component, I have a better understanding of how to proceed with my conversion to SQL. I will use mostly grids and the tabbed UI for the desktop components, and then later develop UX components using List Controls and panels for aspects of the application that will be most used on Mobile Devices. I was thinking that list controls could be used for both, but I think that Grids will offer much more flexibility and ease of design and use for desktop use. The list control, which is part of the new UX contil, while powerful, does not have all the functionality of a Grid, in my analysis.
