Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ExcelDocument autofilter and autofit

    Hi All

    Ive recently upgraded to version 11 and am looking to generate Excel sheets with the new ExcelDocument function! In version 10 I did this using ole.GetObject("","Excel.Application") and I have managed to replicate most of the things I used in the past.

    Im looking for a way to apply an auto filter and set the width of my columns automatically.

    Here is my new code which creates some random data
    Code:
    xlname = tmp_dirv+time("LF-MMdd-0h0m0s")+".xlsx"
    delete doc
    delete sheet
    dim Doc as Office::ExcelDocument
    dim Sheet as Office::Spreadsheet
    Sheet=Doc.AddSheet("Data")
    Sheet.Write(1,1,"Job no.")
    Sheet.Write(1,2,"Section")
    Sheet.Write(1,3,"Date")
    Sheet.Write(1,4,"Time")
    Sheet.Write(1,5,"Duration(Min)")
    Sheet.Write(1,6,"Value(GBP)")
    Sheet.Split(2, 1)
    for i = 2 to 200
    Sheet.Write(i,1,"JOB"+padl(ltrim(str(asc(rand_string(1)),4,0)),4,"0"))
    Sheet.Write(i,2,"Sec "+upper(rand_string(1)))
    Sheet.Write(i,4,time("dd/MM/yyyy",now()+(i*555)))
    Sheet.Write(i,3,time("0h:0m",now()+(i*555)))
    Sheet.Write(i,5,round(rand()*100,2))
    Sheet.Write(i,6,round(rand()*100,2))
    next

    Doc.Save(xlname)
    sys_open(xlname)
    and here is my old code, which uses the auto filter and auto fit
    Code:
    xlApp = ole.GetObject("","Excel.Application")
    xlApp.Workbooks.add()
    xlApp.ActiveSheet.Name = "Data"
    xlApp.Range("A1").Select()
    xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Job no."
    xlApp.ActiveSheet.Name = "Data"
    xlApp.Range("B1").Select()
    xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Section"
    xlApp.ActiveSheet.Name = "Data"
    xlApp.Range("C1").Select()
    xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Date"
    xlApp.ActiveSheet.Name = "Data"
    xlApp.Range("D1").Select()
    xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Time"
    xlApp.ActiveSheet.Name = "Data"
    xlApp.Range("E1").Select()
    xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Duration(Min)"
    xlApp.ActiveSheet.Name = "Data"
    xlApp.Range("F1").Select()
    xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Value(GBP)"
    xlApp.Range("A2").Select()
    xlApp.ActiveWindow.FreezePanes = .t.
    for i = 2 to 200
     xlApp.Range("A"+ltrim(str(i,4,0))).Select()
     xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "JOB"+padl(ltrim(str(asc(rand_string(1)),4,0)),4,"0")
     xlApp.Range("B"+ltrim(str(i,4,0))).Select()
     xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "Sec "+upper(rand_string(1))
     xlApp.Range("C"+ltrim(str(i,4,0))).Select()
     xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = time("dd/MM/yyyy",now()+(i*555))
     xlApp.Range("D"+ltrim(str(i,4,0))).Select()
     xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = time("0h:0m",now()+(i*555))
     xlApp.Range("E"+ltrim(str(i,4,0))).Select()
     xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = round(rand()*100,2)
     xlApp.Range("F"+ltrim(str(i,4,0))).Select()
     xlApp.ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = round(rand()*100,2)

    next
    xlApp.Cells.EntireColumn.AutoFit()'Sets column widths
    xlApp.Range("A1").Select()
    xlApp.Selection.AutoFilter()'Sets autofilter
    xlApp.Visible = .t.

    Re: ExcelDocument autofilter and autofit

    It doesn't appear that the new class has all the bells and whistles.

    Note the use of expected maximums in the snippet

    Code:
    dim ColumnWidth[5] as N
    ColumnWidth[1] = len("Wednesday")
    ColumnWidth[2] = len("00/00/0000")
    ColumnWidth[3] = len("($000,000.00)")
    ColumnWidth[4] = len("($000,000.00)")
    ColumnWidth[5] = len("($000,000.00)")
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan,

      Thank you for your input.

      I guess I could extend this so that where I have column that could vary in width I could check the width each time I write to the column and then set the width at the end

      Code:
      xlname = tmp_dirv+time("LF-MMdd-0h0m0s")+".xlsx"
      delete doc
      delete sheet
      dim Doc as Office::ExcelDocument
      dim Sheet as Office::Spreadsheet
      Sheet=Doc.AddSheet("Data")

      Sheet.Write(1,1,"Job no.")
      Sheet.Write(1,2,"Section")
      Sheet.Write(1,3,"Date")
      Sheet.Write(1,4,"Time")
      Sheet.Write(1,5,"Duration(Min)")
      Sheet.Write(1,6,"Value(GBP)")
      sheet.Write(1,7,"Notes")
      Sheet.Split(2, 1)

      dim ColumnWidth[7] as N
      ColumnWidth[1] = len("JOB0000")
      ColumnWidth[2] = len("SEC 00")
      ColumnWidth[3] = len("00/00/0000")
      ColumnWidth[4] = len("00:00")
      ColumnWidth[5] = len("(000.00)")
      ColumnWidth[6] = len("($0,000.00)")
      ColumnWidth[7] = len("notes")

      for i = 2 to 200
      x=1
      Sheet.Write(i,x,"JOB"+padl(ltrim(str(asc(rand_string(1)),4,0)),4,"0"))
      x=x+1
      Sheet.Write(i,x,"Sec "+upper(rand_string(1)))
      x=x+1
      Sheet.Write(i,x,time("dd/MM/yyyy",now()+(i*555)))
      x=x+1
      Sheet.Write(i,x,time("0h:0m",now()+(i*555)))
      x=x+1
      Sheet.Write(i,x,round(rand()*100,2))
      x=x+1
      Sheet.Write(i,x,round(rand()*100,2))
      x=x+1
      note = rand_string(round(rand()*100,0))
      Sheet.Write(i,x,note)
      [COLOR="#0000FF"]cellw = len(trim(note))
      	if cellw > ColumnWidth[x] then
      		ColumnWidth[x] = cellw
      	end if[/COLOR]
      next

      [COLOR="#0000FF"]for i = 1 to 7
      	sheet.SetColumn(i,i,ColumnWidth[i]+3)
      next[/COLOR]

      Doc.Save(xlname)
      sys_open(xlname)
      The main thing I want to be able to do though is apply the autofilter!

      Is there any work around for this using Office::ExcelDocument?

        Re: ExcelDocument autofilter and autofit

        I don't see any indication that xlApp = ole.GetObject("","Excel.Application") is not to be supported in the future and it readily makes available much more functionality. One wonders why you're intent on using the new class method.
        There can be only one.

          One of the reaseons we upgraded to version 11 was for the new Excel API!

          The Office class can read and write Excel files. It doesn't require Microsoft Excel
          Not all our users have Excel and the ones that do only have office 2000. I currently have no budget to purchase or upgrade any licences so using the Excel API would enable me to use open office or a mixture of spreadsheet packages

          I did look at using ole.Create() with open office a while back with no real success.

          The Excel API also appears to run faster, on the 2 examples on my first post the 1st script finishes instantly. It would be nice to have an autofilter command, but I guess there is no work around for this
