Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    how do I get Action Javascript to call Javascript functions?

    I have an Javascript Action called AfterRetrieveQuery

    The code looks like:
    alert("in afterretievequery action");
    set_values_checkboxes();
    set_criteria_in_embed_grids();

    Set_values_checkboxes and set_criteria_in_embed_grids are functions defined under the Dialog Code Javascript functions section.

    function set_values_checkboxes () {
    alert("in set_values_checkboxes");

    var ls_units = get_units();
    var ls_lbs = get_lbs();
    var ls_tickcnt = get_tickcnt();
    var ls_landings = get_landings();
    var ls_effort = get_fisher_effort();
    var ls_avgprice = get_avg_price();

    alert(" units = " + ls_units);
    alert(" pounds = " + ls_lbs);
    alert(" ticket cnt = " + ls_tickcnt);
    alert(" landings = " + ls_landings);
    alert(" effort = " + ls_effort);
    alert(" price = " + ls_avgprice);
    }

    function set_criteria_in_embed_grids() {
    alert("in set_criteria_in_embed_grids");
    }

    I am able to call the AfterRetrieveQuery action from an event in a dialog field, but it goes no further. It doesn't even show the alert on the first line of the set_values_checkboxes () function.

    I have spent hours looking thru the documentation to find an example of calling a javascript function from an Action or from an event but have not found anything.

    I assume that get_units() and the rest are other JS functions that you have created and defined in the dialog?

    Comment out you code and start with a simple alert() and see if that works for you.

      I commented out everything in the set_values_checkboxes function except the alert at the top.
      The program pops up the alert just before the call to this function, but not the one just inside the function. Simple deduction - there is something wrong with how I am calling the function. I just have no idea what.

        Run your component in Firefox with Firebug installed & select "console/all" in Firebug; you will see what goes wrong.

          You appear to have a space before the () in your function definition: function set_values_checkboxes ()

            The space is irrelevant. I have several functions with a space between the name and paren. They still get called.

            There is probably an error either in the functions shown here or in one of the called functions. If an error is encountered, the functions stop executing. FireBug will definitely help here. Alternative, you could pop open IE or Chrome and open the console window (F12). The Console Window will print any javascript errors if they occur.

              Re: how do I get Action Javascript to call Javascript functions?

              The error it gives me is "SCRIPT5009: 'set_values_checkboxes' is undefined ". This is why I asked for help. The only thing in set_values_checkboxes is an alert. I define set_values_checkboxes in the Code - Javascript functions as:

              function set_values_checkboxes() {

              alert("in set_values_checkboxes");
              }

              I call it in an Action Javascript named 'AfterRetrieveQuery' coded as:

              alert("in afterretievequery action");
              set_values_checkboxes();
              set_criteria_in_embed_grids();

              The program gives the alert "in afterretrievequery action", but not the "in_set_values_checkboxes" alert.

              Am I defining set_values_checkboxes() in the wrong place? If so, where should I be defining it?

                Why not try avoiding the action javascript for now and just use a regular javascript function defined within the javascript section (these are set as globals). It should work this way....

                  Re: how do I get Action Javascript to call Javascript functions?

                  OK. I created another function in the Code - Javascript functions :

                  function after_retrieve_query() {
                  alert("in after_retrieve_query");
                  set_values_checkboxes();
                  set_criteria_in_embed_grids();
                  }

                  I called it in the OnChange event of a field by doing a Run Action that produced the folllowing javascript:

                  {dialog.object}.runAction('after_retrieve_query();');

                  It didn't work at all. I did not even get the alert from the 'after_retrieve_query()' function.

                  Is there another way to call this function?

                    The problem with this statement is the ; inside of the runAction. It should read:

                    {dialog.object}.runAction('after_retrieve_query()');

                      no brackets.
                      But just call the javascript function:
                      after_retrieve_query();

                        A Defined JavaScript Action is different from a JavaScript function located under the Code - Javascript functions menu.

                        If the code is located in the Code - Javascript functions menu you do not need to use the runAction command you can simply:

                          I tried just deleting the ';'. That did not work. Which brackets are you refering to? Are you saying I don't need the {dialog.object}.runAction() ? I don't know how to call the function from the Onchange event without Action Javascript. Can you please give me the steps?
