Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows 8

Has anyone figured out a way to run Alpha4 version 8 in Windows 8? I apologize if this has been dealt with elsewhere. I searched the forum, but didn't find the answer.

I don't see why you couldn't use DosBox which is free (see my thread about getting it to work under Windows 7).

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried DosBox in the past and thought it was time consuming to use. Maybe I just never completely understood it.

As long as you run your DOS app in one window only, no multi-user and don't need printer it's fine and useful. Easy to set up and run.

I need a printer. Have you tried a product by dbase.com called "DbaseDos?

                      Re: Windows 8

now you've gone back to what I suggested in post #2 and its called DbDOS
Mike Rozlog told me he tested it for varieties including compiled Clipper and the printer handing is no problem
The newer version has even more printer functionality but it is expensive.
There are two things you try with Dosbox
DOSPRN and DosPrin must be paid for, the first is shareware

Thanks Ray. Yes I found dbDos. It is expensive, but might be worth it if it can proven that it runs Alpha Four. I have been using A4 for over 20 years and have recently been purchasing XP machines for future backup to continue using A4. It would be really nice to run A4 seamlessly on W7 and W8 if that is possible Dbdos.

There is a workaround but first let me say that I was also reluctant for some time to use DosBox since it sounded complicated. But the DosBox website also includes some simple explanation about quickly creating a shortcut via Windows and running your program. It is really very simple if you just follow those directions.

The other thing is how to get around the printing. As far as Alpha 4 goes there is a Printer Configuration screen that should work for you. But barring that there is another alternative. You can print to a file and then use another great free utility PrintFile to print the output to any Windows printer.

To Burlb--DosBox (FREE) absolutely DOES run Alpha 4 (at least on my machine which is Win 7-64-bit). The key is to run the A4V8.exe file and NOT the A4.exe file.
