Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Re: RUNTIME installation files

No question, it is not as snappy as a real desktop application; moves more at browser speed. But the underlying xbasic processing is just as fast.

DBF, a dozen tables, one desktop form (the opening menu) and a dozen web grids/dialogs and a tabbedui. No reports yet but will be added.

It is a "data blending" application for school districts. It takes a list of students in special programs, finds a "comparison student" among the general student population based on criteria like GPA, parent's income, test scores, etc.

The meat of the application is data crunching, which is why I am sad we went with DBF. Went that route because I started out building a traditional desktop app and to be honest I don't know how to effectively use SQL on a desktop application, although I know it is possible.

I would say the process of building a WCD application is 90% web knowledge and a bit of desktop. I chose to use a desktop form as the opening screen but could have used the tabbed ui. There is a slight problem with going straight to the tabbedui -- it appeared as a floating child window inside of Alpha Five. By using the desktop form, I was able to make tabbedui fit inside Alpha without a window.

If there is interest I will schedule an online Showcase and show how it was built.

          Re: RUNTIME installation files

mine is similar. about 14 tables dbf, a dozen form with one very large form, 5 browse, 18 reports, about 8 sets. all desktop though.

Sounds like no size advantage either way.

          Thanks

Sure there are. Alpha creates folders and files it needs to process that are unique to the user that are either in the Alpha Five Shared folder, the Windows Temp folder, the Alpha Five EXE folder (for older versions of A5) and subfolders off of them. There are also a few other places under the Documents and Settings folder that are used as well.

Yes, that is an unfortunate situation because the user can merely slide the TUI and gain access to the CP. Even if access to the CP is not gained, it is a sloppy, unprofessional way of using the TUI. It would make sense for Alpha complete the TUI so it can be used as a true TUI. While using a form works, it's a work around and not the first choice for any developer. Unfortunately, at this point, it's the only choice.

                Re: RUNTIME installation files

I don't think having to have a Desktop Form as the opening menu is a problem. It is after all supposed to be a merge of Desktop and Web Components and we should take advantages of both worlds. Besides fixing the "modal window" problem I described earlier, having the Desktop form allows me to apply poor man's security. The "Admin" menu button requires a password (feature of Desktop) but the also sets a global variable. That global var then provides the ability to show/hide buttons on the TabbedUI. So if they click the Admin button and provide the password the same TabbedUI shows up, but also has an additional tab for Admin features not available to the normal user.

I think if this application grows in popularity* I will replace the DBF engine with a small portable SQL engine.

                  Re: RUNTIME installation files

Steve - plus one, interested in following your suggested showcase.

DBFs. Personally, I appreciate their lightweight portability. Clients' data guys like the accessibility. My clients are SMEs.
When a speed issue arises, usually from the way a client uses a particular segment of the program, a quick redesign for the purpose makes it responsive and improves the program.
So I have probably got myself entrenched in DT/DBF bubble.

A typical screenshot shows how I have dealt in this app with the arrow points in your example.
