Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Deleting an Index in Alpha5V11

Good morning, I am very new to Alpha5. I have been using Alpha4 for many years.

I inadvertently created an Index in Version 11 in a Desktop Set, that I cannot seem to Delete. It is called:

    INDEX NAME ORDER EXPRESSION
    Index_Keywords_For_Owner_Name KEYWORDSI(OWNER_NAME,VAR->EXCLUDED_WORDS) Ascending All

I followed the Alphapedia instructions to Delete an Index in a Table. However, it did not work.

Can anyone help with instructions on how to delete this Index? Many thanx.

    Hi Howard,

The index your refer to is used in the link of your set. This was created when you built the set.

You cannot delete an index that was created by Alpha unless you delete the set.

      Hello Howard and welcome,

Keith is correct of course, but, may I suggest following some naming conventions like keeping field names to 10 letters or less and the same with index names? table names to 8 or less? This can save many headaches down the road.

Index names less than 10 characters saves problems with loss of data dictionaries and uses in other applications with the dbf. Table names can be any length up to about 23 without any issues (probably longer, but there might be issues building set connections). In any cases, no spaces in index names, field names, table names, variable names etc, always use underscores instead of a space.

See my tips on Compatible DBF/Index Naming usage and Variable & Code Naming warnings as well as AIMS Alpha Five naming conventions

Re: Deleting an Index in Alpha5V11

Ira is correct, but I have experienced truncation of index names, file names and field names in the past.

          When?:
while developing with all three, but coincided with very bad Florida weather.
While running a shadow I have had all three at various times again with very bad florida weather.
Bad Florida lightning storms cause the electricity to simulate a brownout or extra spikes in the flow of electricity and well as shutting completely of for a few milliseconds. Creates havoc with hardware and software.

Not blaming alpha, I believe it had more to do with windows and hardware than the software. Just use your own judgement.

This has happened with xp3 and win7.

If I tried real hard, I think I could duplicate this regularly, but not needing to with the shorter names I use, why would I want to?

Add also that using short names may just allow you to complete a large set of code that would not be doable with very long names. There is a limit in some places the length. Also the longer the names, the more chance of mistakes.

Maybe not clear in my previous statement, but I said index names (and I didn't explicitly say field names but them too) should be 10 characters or less to minimize risk with data dictionary problems when they get corrupted or use with other applications (like excel).

However, variable names, file names and pretty much everything else is good to 24 characters (less 1 to allow for aliases) without any issues, and file names can even be longer (though they really shouldn't be overly long as these have issues with writing to some media (e.g. a DVD/CD)).

Limitation in calculations index expressions etc maybe 255 characters, 512 or 1024 or any length, and using shorter names might help in a few cases, but UDF's can be utilized if you run out of room. Longer names does not slow down any code in any measurable way, and they should be as long as needed to be self documenting, save other issues like field names and index names (which are native dbf limitations)
