Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Filtering child records shows then disappears creating a new record

    Hello All:

    Running into some issue with filtering browse. It works great on existing record but does not work on new records. When the filter is applied the browse data just shows up for 3 seconds and the dissappears. It works great for existing record but does not for new and newly saved record.

    I am attaching my project and code I am using (Martin helped me with the code).

    Code:
    dim global rnum as n
    t=table.current()
    rnum=t.recno()
    datafilter="(mainfilter = "+quote(mainfilter.value)+")"
    topparent:tables:producttable.filter_expression =  datafilter
    topparent:tables:producttable.query()

    if t.recno() <> rnum
    	parentform.index_set("")
    	parentform.find(rnum)
    	rnum=0
    end if
    end
    I believe it has to do with recno(). BEcause if you look at the status bar the record number changes all the time. Maybe I am wrong.

    I am also attaching a video cast of it.

    Thanks for the help.

    Looks like refreshing the embedded browse does the trick.

    Code:
    dim global rnum as n
    t=table.current()
    rnum=t.recno()
    datafilter="mainfilter = "+quote(mainfilter.value)      ' <------------I removed unnecessary parentheses here, also
    topparent:tables:producttable.filter_expression =  datafilter
    topparent:tables:producttable.query()

    [COLOR="#FF0000"]parentform:control_browse1.refresh()[/COLOR]

    end

    'if t.recno() <> rnum
    '	parentform.index_set("")
    '	parentform.find(rnum)
    '	rnum=0
    'end if
    'end

      Re: Filtering child records shows then disappears creating a new record

      Hi Tom:

      Omitting following code brings back to record #1 and then it works. But I would like to stay on the newly record number.
      Code:
      'if t.recno() <> rnum
      '	parentform.index_set("")
      '	parentform.find(rnum)
      '	rnum=0
      'end if
      'end
      Also, using following code still give me the same issue.

      Code:
      dim global rnum as n
      t=table.current()
      rnum=t.recno()
      datafilter="mainfilter = "+quote(mainfilter.value)      ' <------------I removed unnecessary parentheses here, also
      topparent:tables:producttable.filter_expression =  datafilter
      topparent:tables:producttable.query()

      parentform:control_browse1.refresh()

      end

      if t.recno() <> rnum
      	parentform.index_set("")
      	parentform.find(rnum)
      	rnum=0
      end if
      end

        I guess this means I don't understand the issue. Thought the browse display was disappearing. Will stand down maybe someone else will offer further suggestions.

          Here is the problem.

          1) If you are creating a new record and want to display appropriate data in browse using following code work but brings back to you to record #1 when I should be on the new record number (say 345).
          2) #1 probalem was solved using following code but data started disappearing:
          Code:
          dim global rnum as n
          t=table.current()
          rnum=t.recno()
          datafilter="mainfilter = "+quote(mainfilter.value)      ' <------------I removed unnecessary parentheses here, also
          topparent:tables:producttable.filter_expression =  datafilter
          topparent:tables:producttable.query()

          parentform:control_browse1.refresh()

          end

          if t.recno() <> rnum
          	parentform.index_set("")
          	parentform.find(rnum)
          	rnum=0
          end if
          end
          3) Now I would like to solve the data disappearing problem.

          The solution you gave me is the same as #1. If you note the record number it would bring back to you to record #1.

            Not same as code in post one. U did not refresh the browse.

            Please distinguish between recno in the table u are talking about. Your code is getting recno in parent table. I am confused why?

              why did you put an "end" in the script? so it doesn't take you back to the right record?

                Yes! Do I need that?

                  Re: Filtering child records shows then disappears creating a new record

                  The records are 'disappearing' when on a new record because of your set structure. You are using Fakeid to link all child records to every parent. But you do not have a mechanism to assign a value (in this case, 9 ) to the new parent record linking field. If you place Fakeid on the form and give it a value of 9 then the child records don't 'disappear.' To do this automatically - assign the value 9 to the Fakeid field in the parent using the default value field rule. And do the same for the child table.

                    the end causes it not to fetch to the record you want - remove the end

                      Mark,

                      When you say "enter a new record" are you talking about entering a new record to the parent table of your set, or to the child table ? Data entry in Alpha Five is table based. While your form may be based on a set of tables, the data entry occurs only in the tables, one at a time. It's now beginning to look like you were talking about new parent table records, while I mistakenly assumed you were talking about new child table records. That's why I inserted the "End" statement, and commented out the code which "finds" the current parent table record.

                        Hi Tom:
                        Yes, I mean parent table. I am not really entering any record into the child table. Even if I take the "END" out it disappears.

                        Good news is that Tim's solution worked! Sometime I just feel dumb. I though I did that. I made the filed to put 9 automatically and now the data does not disappear!

                        Thanks Tim, Marin and Tom!
