Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Website 'Chat Now' on Alpha Application Server

I am looking to add a Website 'Chat Now' option onto my Alpha Anywhere website. I already use Steve Wood's Framework and that has saved me hours of work. Anyone looking into making websites with Alpha should purchase Steve's Framework. In Fact, Alpha should have purchased it from Steve and have it as part of the Sample Apps that come with Alpha, but I am getting of topic.

I am looking to add a 'Chat Now' button to my website. I need it to be where I can set it to 'offline' when no one is available to chat. When offline I would want it to point my 'Contact Us' page. When we have people available, a chat will pop up on their screen. I want the chat system table based, this way we can keep track of the chats for training and other reasons.

If someone knows of something OpenSource, that would be great, otherwise, we don't mind paying. I have been looking online and it seems the one's I have found so far need PHP. Even the ones that work with jquery seem to need PHP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.... I heard about Google Talk Chat, but it seems the link is down or broken. I will look into candy since I already run a jabber service for a few clients. Thanks Again

        Barry,

I've been thinking about this as well. It looks to me as if this is something you could create yourself very easily in Alpha itself. The only thing that maybe a little tricky is how you can be notified while doing other stuff but I think that with javascript's setinterval for example you can easily put an alert up on your screen that automatically takes focus.

          Frank:

I agree that I could write it myself. The issue is I am finally at a point in my career and Alpha offers so many options, that I don't need to recreate the wheel anymore. If the offerings that are out there don't meet my clients needs or budget, then that's something I will undertake. Since the 'Chat Now', was a request made at the last minute, I would rather use a proven product, than write it from scratch.

When I look back at software I wrote 10 or 20 years ago, and the nightmares I had trying to get something to work in FoxPro and then Alpha, where now Alpha does it with a control and no lines of code, I am amazed at what I can now do for my clients. But, with all of the advances in Alpha, client requests have been more advanced also.

I meant to add to the chain that Google Talk 'Chat' has been discontinued. Lost my train of thought during the writing of the email and I left that part out. Thanks for adding that, this way others who might be looking for a 'Chat Now' function doesn't go looking for it.

It should not be hard to create this right in Alpha. Nice option so you can store the chat and relate it to your customer/prospect.

                  Steve:

                  Get to it then. LOL

As with many of your products. You keep on selling 'em and I'll keep taking credit for 'em.

BTW, For anyone out there who is a bit new to Alpha, PLEASE SAVE YOURSELF alot of time and headaches and purchase Steve's GREAT Products (www.alphadevnet.com). Steve's Framework gives you a ready to go website with admin functions, security, tabbed user interface and graphics. It is a GREAT starting point for whatever website project you will be working on. Just in case someone might think this is an advertisement for Steve Wood, well it is, but I receive nothing extra for it and I am sure there are 100's like me who feel the same about Steve's work and products.

(I Hope I am Right About the Following Statement!) As long as they are running on the same server, you purchase the framework once and you get to use it over and over again. I can't tell you how much time and energy Steve has saved me and I am forever grateful for all he has done for me. I have purchased almost all of his offerings; including the V2 & V3 Frameworks, PayPal Interface (Mine is not live yet, but coming along) and his guide on CKEditor integration. And when his 'Chat Now' product comes out, if I don't have something in place yet, I will look closely at it.
