Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    upgrade from V1.04 to V11

I'm not even sure if this is possible because the only files I can get V11 to read are my dbf files. If I try to 'Add Table/Set', Alpha won't successfully add the table if I also have the .ddd and .ddm files from the old app in my new folder. If I copy JUST the .dbf file into my new folder and add the table, Alpha will successfully add the table and create a .ddd and ddm file. There must be something in the format of the older .ddd and .ddm files that A5V11 can't read (which is unfortunate because it has my forms).

Does anyone know if A5V11 can read the data dictionary files (.ddd and .ddm) created with A5V1.04? Or is there another method I need to use to accomplish this task?

Lastly....I am completely unsuccessful at getting my sets into V11 (tried 'Add Table/Set' using my .set file and it doesn't work, no error messages, but the set is not added to my workspace).

I don't think you can go from that version to V11

I think you will have to go to maybe 4.5 first and then to v11
and reset arrays - Cal has a function for it

I believe I jumped to v3 then v4/4.5 and on up as they came out. Not sure if a jump to v4 will work well. I wish I had kept my old versions back past v7, but alas....

Were I looking at this situation, I would just redo the whole app and only use the dbf and fpt files from v1. It would probably be easier and faster than trying to go through all the steps needed to up the app step by step and then rewriting all the forms and code along the way, knowing you will be changing some stuff in the end anyhow.

I believe I still have A5v4 installed and running here (somewhere). Let me know if I can help.

Sounds like it may be worth my while to first attempt to upgrade the app from V1.04 to V4.5 and THEN see if I can go straight to V11.

Now to locate an old version of V4.5.....for temporary use.

              John:

              Hmmm..... Ancient history...

Personally, I'd suggest you go right to version 11 or 12.

Version 1.x was from the Windows (For Workgroups) 16 bit version of the day.

When version 2 came out, it had no XBasic language with it, but it was 32 bit. (I'm pretty sure, anyway.)

Version 3 had XBasic with a LOT of new syntax.

I moved 1 application to version 4.5, and had to rework quite a bit of code. Additionally, what code there was seemed to have been converted to scripts with names that probably meant something to people at Alpha Software, but no one else. The names were unique, like GUID's.

I also had to re-do the card stack, which you really want to do as forms, since card stacks are "Obsolete".

Good luck with whichever path you choose.

Tom told you he has 4.5, and I have it, too
