Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cascading list question

    Hello,
I'm trying to filter a dropdown list based on a parent dropdown selection where the filter is in a nested SQL statement such as:

    SELECT ColA, ColB FROM Table1 WHERE ColC IN (SELECT ColC FROM Table1 T1, Table2 T2 WHERE T1.ColA = T2.ColA AND (T1.ColB = 1) AND (T2.ColB = ?))

    I need to filter the T2.ColB = ? field.

Is this possible, and if so, how to do I go about doing it?

I we understood the context it might make it easier to help.

First of all, you can't use the drop down list to do this - you need to use a lookup with a dynamic filter.

If that pushes you in the right direction, then great. Otherwise, shout back with more info.

      Re: Cascading list question

I apologize, I'm still new to the product but how do I go about creating a lookup with a dynamic filter, and one that will adjust to a previously selected dropdown list on my form.
And I'm not sure why I can't do this in a dropdown, since it's simply a matter of adjusting the datasource SQL query to include the value from a different object on the form, I thought that's what the cascading list feature was for?

        Re: Cascading list question

Also, as for context. I have a series of DropDownBoxes on my form, some of which need to be filtered based on choices made in other boxes. This particular control has an embedded SQL statement that I need to include a variable value into.

        Does that clear it up?

          Re: Cascading list question

For starters, go into your form and look at one of your drop down boxes that needs cascading. Temporarily set it back to a regular field.

You will see a "lookup" property in your list of properties for that field.

Check that lookup box and you'll see more options appear.

Change the lookup type to auto-suggest list.

Then check out the options for filling the lookup. You will see that one of them is a dynamic filter.

To answer some of your questions:

          1) dropdown boxes are pretty generic. You can easily set a drop down for preset data, but they aren't appropriate for dynamic data.
          2) You CAN fill your drop down boxes with variable data, but it requires scripting. I don't have the scripting chops to do it right, but I think you might be able to find a video on it.
          3) because you want to dynamically fill in a field on a select within a select, you may not be able to do it using standard methods - you'll probably have to script it somehow.

            Thanks for your quick reply.

I don't see a 'lookup' property, or through the search either. Not sure what I'm missing here. (Note: This is for a web project, forgot to mention that earlier.)

Also, thanks for the info. If I have to script, then that's fine, just need to get the form looking the way they want it to look.

              Re: Cascading list question

You have to look in the field properties. Lookup is not an option from a dropdown field. You have to select it from a textbox field. Click on a text box field in your field list to see the field properties, then click on search properties, upper right.

                I see it now.
I'll check into this, if not I will script what they want done.

                Thanks for you help.
