Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Importing tables is changing field types in local table

I am having an issue with an operation I am running in my desktop app. The operation imports all fields from a table on the server and creates a local table. The table has two date fields (type is "date" on the MSSQL Server). When I bring in the local table, it changes these fields to character fields. I can change the field type on the local table after the import, but this is unrealistic as this app will have frequent imports and exports by my client.

I'm Creating a Table, Overwriting Without Prompting.

Here are a few things that I have tried, with no luck:
    - adding a convert to my select statement in the operation,
    - changing the SQL Type from Portable to Native in the operation,
    - checked the "Convert all Time fields to Date fields" box in the local table field definition Advanced Options (even though the SQL Server fields are dates, not datetimes),
    - changed my SQL Server fields to datetimes, which I don't want, still imports wrong,
    - I've deleted the local table and imported it again, no change,
    - I've deleted the operation and recreated it, same problem.
    - I've changed the "Select * from table" to "Select field, field, field from table"

This project was an old app that was originally created in Alpha 10 or 11. I'm currently making changes to it in Alpha Anywhere.

If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great. I'm fairly new to Alpha5, and this is my first project working with operations.

    Thanks!
    Shawna

So, no bites on this one then!

In MySQL it imports as a date field.

Actually, when I view the records in the active link test I just did, the date fields came through as null, even though the type showed as "date".

Yes, they will. There is nothing in them. Click on the data field and the date picker should appear.

Ted, sorry, I thought I had posted something before the last reply, but apparently not! An active link table is not going to work in this situation, as this app is created to be used where there is no online access, and then to be synced up with the main database later. I did create an active link table and imported data to see what happened as you suggested. The records I imported from DO have data in the date fields. But when imported into the local table they came in as null. I'm not going to worry about this right now though, since an active link table is not going to work in this situation.

What I really need to figure out is why the local tables that are created during my import operation are converting my MSSQL date fields to character fields.

Then I'm out of ideas. In V11 it seems to work OK with MySQL
In MySQL, date fields are imported as date fields. I don't have MS SQL loaded but I'll try it with that when I can.

Re: Importing tables is changing field types in local table

We have tested importing date, datetime, and time fields from all versions of MS SQL Server (where applicable) with no problems. The imported dbf table has the correct data type in all cases. If you can send us the table create statement from SQL Server, we can evaluate your specific condition.
