Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows 7 Printing

    I'm running A4V7.

The physical software is located on the O: drive
I've created a shortcut that runs the application in the O: drive
The shortcut runs the following BAT file

    a4.bat
    printdump.exe spool\ptrinfo.a4]
    start winagent "|path-spool|delete=yes|keep_req=no"
    a4v7.exe -2
    start winagent "command=quit"
The user has two main printers. A USB printer (dell color laser) and a network printer (Konica Minolta). Both printers are installed locally.

    Problem.
Sometimes when she tries to print nothing happens. If she closes the program and reopens it, it will start working SOMETIMES. If she reboots the computer is will also start working SOMETIMES.

    Windows 7 Professional 6.1 (build: 7601) Service Pack 1
    Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7500 at 2926 MHz (x 2)

Any suggestions or links to documentation on how to make this work for us?

I'm not actually getting a printdump crash. It simply acts like it is going to print and then never does.

When running Alpha Four and when running the batch file, has a "compatibility mode" been set?

Have you tried running Alpha Four in a virtual XP box under Win 7?

I will try again, but I did not see an option for 'compatibility mode'. I figured it was because I was running the BAT file from a network drive.

I am under the impression that only ULTIMATE has the true XP Compatibility Mode. That HOME and PROFESSIONAL only have a pseudo compability mode hooked to the short cut that starts the program. Can anyone else add light to this??

I believe the Pro version of Win7 can be used out of the box to create a virtual XP session. I am doing this on two of my Win 7 Pro boxes now.

I created the XP Virtual session under Windows 7 Professional with SP1, configured the link for Alpha Four as stated above, mapped the O: drive within the application, ran the application, and the user still complains that sometimes printing works and sometimes printing does not work. After restarting the computer she can sometimes print and sometimes not print.

                  Any other thoughts?

It's been so long since I worked with Alpha Four that I'm grasping at straws.

Was vers 7 the last release of Alpha Four?

Did vers 7 pre-date USB printers?

Can she add a conventional parallel port to her system and then connect to an older printer through the parallel port?

Would using a DOS emulator help? Something like DosBox, or the like?

Is the O: drive local to her machine?

If this is on a network do other users have the same problem? If not, what's different about their configuration ?

                      - No, version 8 is

Did vers 7 pre-date USB printers?
                      - I don't know. I've tried USB printing and network printing. The other workstation works fine.

Can she add a conventional parallel port to her system and then connect to an older printer through the parallel port?
                      - No, I don't think I've seen a parallel port on a workstation in 8+ years.

Would using a DOS emulator help? Something like DosBox, or the like?
                      - I have not tried this.

Is the O: drive local to her machine?
                      - O: drive is the network drive.

If this is on a network do other users have the same problem? If not, what's different about their configuration ?
                      - Both Windows 7 Pro machines call the exact same BAT file, and the other one does not have an issue. I can't seem to identify why.

                        Phillip,

You might look for differences in how each of the Windows 7 Pro machines have configured their printer drivers.

What do you mean when you say the printers are "installed locally"? Are the printers shared among the workstations, or does each workstation have their own local printer?

There are two printers on each computer. A USB printer plugged directly into the computer and then the network printer which is installed so the client prints directly to it (no print server or shared printer). With the computer that stops printing happens it does not matter if you try to print locally or over the network.

Ok, If I were you I'd carefully check the complete setup for the two printer drivers on the misbehaving machine. How are they different from the settings on the machine that behaves?

                              Re: Windows 7 Printing

I setup a Win 7 Home Premium today with the latest version of VM WARE and installed winXP inside that window. I loaded my A4V8 application and redid all the mapped drives, reset all my printer drivers and ran some printing tests.

I have 2 printers on my network. 1) lexmark laser which is connected directly to a computer on my network 2) I have an HP7590 ink jet which is connected directly 100baseT to my network.

I was able to print without any problem to the LEXMARK ... everything worked fine. My a4v8 app. was able to see the HP7590 and I setup a printer driver to it. But I was not able to print to the HP7590 over the network. It acted like it would print to the HP but nothing every came out on the printer. I have tested the HP printer from every other true XP workstation and it prints fine from my a4v8 app. (even over the network). Also I noticed that certain longer scripts (that fly on a low power TRUE XP machine) run 10 times slower in the VMWARE window on a i53570K - 3.8ghz - 8gig win 7 machine. I will investigate a little further and see if it can be improved ... and let you-all know when I have something worth reporting.
