Auto Increment Filed Question

I have a two table image placement set, with two tables, on a one to many link. The parent table holds only one field, date_added. The default entry for this field is DATE()

The second table holds multiple fields related to the specific image stored in the child table. The linking field is obviously date_added.

One child table field is called image_number. I have this field set to auto increment and use a default entry expression as follows:

ALLTRIM(CDATE(ADD_DATE))+"-"+"00"

The ADD_DATE field refers to the child table field. Although I guess I don't know that for sure and it could be referring to the parent table.

When I input a new date to the parent table it enters the current date, well and fine.

When I input the first 10 images they get an image number listing as follows:

2013106-00 and so forth through 20131006-09

When it comes time for inputting an 11th image for a given date the image numbering changes by incrementing to the next calendar date and starting the count over again at 00 or

20131006-09 follows with 20131007- 00

A typical day could be as many as 25-30 images added. I really don't want to have images numbered from 1- however unlimited high but rather want them to be saved as the date plus a qualifier number just for that date.

IMHO

Making a 'smart' autoincrement field is not a good idea.

Make the linkage field simple and add other fields that will do the work of date and number within that date.

Or if you expect more than 10 images, add another 0 to the format so it doesn't rollover at 10.

At least in my hands, I don't see that you are allowed to add a calculation within an auto increment field, although the increment works for the portion of the calculation that is allowed (see pic)

The default value of an autoincrement is only used when the first record is added to the table.

So the second and later dates won't be set to the current date.

I would have commented earlier but after my initial post the board cut me off for some reason so I was allowed no activities of any kind.

My solution was to ask the user to assign a number. Basically I used a script that combines the character string of yyyymmdd with "-" with a drop down combo box of 41 numbers (00-40).
