Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using SSL Certificate Along with HTTP pages

    I am building a HIPAA based software which requires using an SSL certificate. The problem is, when activated the ssl certificate for the server I can no longer use http requests which means if people go to mydomian.com they get an error.

    I need the home page to be accessible without it using https because people don't write that in.

    I found this article: Alpha Wiki Link

    Which references this code (edited with my info):

    Code:
    <%A5
    	dim StandardUrl as c = "http://www.plasmapro.org"
    	dim SslUrl as c = "https://www.plasmapro.org"
    	if left(Request.SCRIPT_NAME,17) = "/account"
    	    if .not. ServerSetting.SSL_Enabled
    	        Response.Redirect(SslUrl + Request.SCRIPT_NAME,.t.)
    	    end if
    	else
    	    if ServerSetting.SSL_Enabled
    	        Response.Redirect(StandardUrl + Request.SCRIPT_NAME,.t.)
    	    end if
    	end if
    %>
    But when the page loads, it does not get encrypted. Also when I try to load an https page I get an error.

    My question is what's the combination to make this work?

    What do my server settings have to be and is that code really all that I need?

    Thanks so much! I appreciate it!

    That wiki link doesn't do what you want. Your site needs to be 100% SSL but you want to allow users to not have to type in the full https each time.

    Instead of following the instructions on the link, just set your Alpha web app server to be fully SSL on port 443. But then also fire up any other web server, IIS or Apache or even Alpha Five on a different instance, set to port 80. Be sure that your webroot for that port 80 application is different than the one for SSL. Then place a single page named index.html (or index.a5w if Alpha) with HTML shown below. That will instantly redirect anyone who enters the site on port 80 over to the SSL site.

    <!DOCTYPE html>
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>

    <meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0;URL=https://mydomain.com" />.

    </HEAD>
    <BODY></BODY>
    </HTML>

      Hi Steve,

      Thank you very much for writing back so quickly!! I appreciate it! I have forwarded this info to my client who manages the server and hopefully will get it working without a problem.

      This is kind of crazy that Alpha doesn't have a way to handle it. Who wants a site that wont load the home page?!

      I'm surprised the alpha posted solution doesn't work, it sounds like the perfect fix, but didn't work at all.

        Re: Using SSL Certificate Along with HTTP pages

        I'd like to offer a modification to Steve's suggestion. While what he posted will work, the meta refresh can be less reliable than having the server send a 301 or 302 redirect. This requires a page with code though, not just static HTML.

        From an index.a5w page, you would do this with
        Code:
        <%a5 Response.Redirect("https://" + Request.Host) %>
        You could also configure the App Server for port 80 to use this page for your 404 handler. Then when someone requests http://yoursite/somepath/somepage, they will still get to the SSL site.

        The code in the wiki is addressing a different problem and assumes that you already have 2 Alpha instances running, one for standard HTTP and

          Also, the wiki does address your question separately: How to provide both HTTP and SSL services for a single application by using multiple Application Server configuration files

            Hi Lenny,

            I was following this thread and went back to look at our server running V12 with SSL on port 443 as I didn't recall having a problem when we switched to SSL. So, I didn't find any redirect code at all to redirect to http. It seems to get routed over to the https without any issues.

            There are firewall rules for both 443 and port 80. Can be that this is being handled by Alpha or the firewall?

            Thanks,
            Tom
