Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Setting static text dynamically with javascript

    Hi there,

    I'm new to Alpha Five coming to it from an 'MS Access' background.
    I want to set a static text control dynamically using javascript, but I'm having no luck.

    {grid.object}.setValue('D','[STATIC TEXT.1].[STATIC TEXT]','Pending Status');

    Is this possible and is my syntax correct? Is there another way of showing 'non field' data in Detail View.

    Thanks in advance for your time.

    Joe

    Re: Setting static text dynamically with javascript

    Ok A5 guys I'm feeling rejected.... I didn't get any replies to my post, but not to worry it just forced me to look and try until I got a solution.

    I had the break-through watching Selwyn Rabin's recent webinar XBasic Intro, these webinars are brilliant. They are currently listed under Events on the AlphaSoftware website.

    I'm new to A5 so excuse my ramblings, I'll explain what I wanted to do and how I achieved the solution.
    Ok here goes.....

    I have a basic grid control with a list part and a detail part. The list part shows client names, which when clicked shows the detail of the selected client.
    I wanted to show the client name as a dynamic bold heading on top of the detail section to make it obvious to the user what client had been selected.
    By watching the webinar the first thing I realised was that if you want to populate a static text control you have to add a 'div ID' as part of the static text. After inserting and positioning the StaticText control, I then clicked on the 'static text' property and entered this div tag <div id="ClientTitle"></div>

    Ok I've got my <div> so I now want to interact with it.
    I clicked on the properties of the grid part and scrolled down to the 'Javascript - System Events' section and clicked on 'System events' property, there is a single event in there called afterAjaxCallbackComplete, click on the event and then type the following in the corresponding Javascript code window.

    var rn={grid.object}._selectedRow;
    var cname = {grid.object}.getValue('G','ClientName',rn);
    $('ClientTitle').innerHTML=cname;

    Obviously you type whatever fieldname is relevant to your situation, I wanted the ClientName value from the row that was selected.
    I learnt the javascript syntax for this by clicking on the 'Insert Grid Method' link and looked through all the various methods that are very well documented. (A5 has loads of documentation which I love) I encourage you to read the documentation carefully for the various methods, it's all good stuff!

    To add a bit of basic formatting I changed the javascript to this...

    var rn={grid.object}._selectedRow;
    var cname = {grid.object}.getValue('G','ClientName',rn);
    $('ClientTitle').innerHTML="<font color=#ff0000 size=6>"+ cname + "</font>";

    I'm sure there are more elegant ways of applying a style, but it worked heh.

    Hope that helps someone!

    Joe

    PS: To add a style to your DIV with css rather than doing it inline as above, simply create a style called #ClientTitle (as per div example above) and apply the approriate properties to it.

      Re: Setting static text dynamically with javascript

      You could also just put the style in your div and skip the font tag in your innerHTML:

      Code:
      <div style="color:#f00;font-size:6;" id="ClientTitle"></div>
      You got the rest of things pretty much spot on. Except for your {grid.object}.setValue(...) in that first post. That's not really going to work. I don't actually know how to get/set value on a static text object using {grid.object}.[get|set]Value(...).

      You can populate the static text directly without needing the extra DIV. I recommend using $svs() and $gvs(). Just have to make sure you use the right ID for your static object. Probably has the form "{grid.object}.D.V.R1._UNBOUND_STATICTEXT_1" or something. I can't tell you exactly what that is. You'll need to use Firebug to look it up. But, then you can do something like this instead:

      Code:
      $svs('{grid.componentName}.D.V.R1._UNBOUND_STATICTEXT_1', {grid.object}.getValue('G','CLIENTNAME',{grid.object}._selectedRow));
      Depending on where you put the static text object and how you chose to display the detail view, you may or may not encounter errors. For example, if the div is in the detail view and the detail view isn't shown until someone clicks on a record, your code to set the title in afterAjaxCallbackComplete could fail if the HTML for the detail view doesn't exist yet - $('ClientTitle') would return undefined and an error would be logged to the console. I would recommend that you put your header code in the afterDetailViewOpen event instead. And maybe afterDetailViewNewRecord - if you can add new records. You want a blank title for a new record maybe?

        Re: Setting static text dynamically with javascript

        Hi Sarah,

        Thank you for your input.

        I did use an inline style initially but I thought best practice was not to use hardcoded inline styles, but rather keep the styles together in a css file.
        Is there not a way of finding out the static text control name in design view? I looked under the xbasic tab and the following block of code does refers to the static text as you have it.

        with tmpl.detailfield_info[1]
        .Controltype = "Unbound_StaticText"
        .Fieldname = "_Unbound_StaticText_1" '<<<<< I guess this is the name to reference it by
        .Varname = "_Unbound_StaticText_1"
        .StaticText = "<div id=\"ClientTitle\"></div>"
        .Column.CanSort = .f.
        .Column.Heading = ""
        .Column.InLineStyle = ""
        .Column.heading_left = ""
        .Column.LabelInLineStyle = ""
        .Column.Hide = .f.
        .clientSideConditionalStyle = ""
        .clientSideConditionalStyleLevel = "Cell"
        .Column.LabelPosition = "Left"
        .nCols = 1
        .BreakType = "None"
        end with

        In your example you referenced the static control correctly but what does the D.V.R1. represent between the gridcontrol and the static control.
        $svs('{grid.componentName}.D.V.R1._UNBOUND_STATICTEXT_1', {grid.object}.getValue('G','CLIENTNAME',{grid.object}._selectedRow));

        Thanks again,

        Joe

          D.V.R1 - detail view row 1? It's part of alpha's auto-generated ID naming convetions. V.R{grid.rowNumber} for grid rows, V.R1 for dialogs, S for grid search parts. There are more for tabbed ui components and the like.

            Cheers, thank's for that. I'm learning something new every day with A5, there's such a lot of little nuances like that which throw me.
            I guess these things are designed to give the programmer greater control in working with the various grid elements at a scripting level.

            Thanks
