Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Upload a copy of the database. We can test it on our machines to eliminate a machine issue or a database issue.

      Thanks for taking a look...

I as going to upload last nite, but as the saying goes, life interferes with life sometimes....

      Hope the attached provides insight.

Please note this is the starting point of the system. There are some other databases involved but I have not included them. The problem is universal across all databases, including Alpha Sports, which should load the Main Menu every time. I checked the settings on Sports and all seems to be proper.

Here's to hoping someone can tell me where to look for a computer/system error OR I would be happy to know where my A5 problem is.

Good news!.. well not really. The form StartSystemMenu opens automatically on my computer. I would hazard to guess it is a system issue with your computer.

tom's steps in post 14 are the only suggestion I can think of at this time.

SO, finally I have a breakthrough, one which shall verify the other posts

I went to a different computer in the house, same make (HP) and software set up (as in Windows 7). I installed A5V10 (without the latest patch) and added the database attached to this thread to somewhere other than C:\Program Files.

I loaded Alpha Sports and then my own small test application. Each worked like a charm. HENCE I PRETTY MUCH VERIFIED it is the computer as other have taken their important time to say also.

So, suggestions as to what might be the culprit on the computer are appreciated.

Bob, thanks for the additional news. I think you need to do a complete re-installation of Windows 7 on your machine, but couldn't begin to tell you the best way to go about it. Sorry. -- tom

Is the first erratic database installed in C:\Program Files ?

                  no

it is installed in its own directory.

I have a large HD so I partition it. I actually store nothing on the main C drive, other than program files. In this case the database itself resides on a partition while the program resides in a main folder (not program files) directory for its particular version.

                    Bob. Run the following in the Elevated Command Prompt;

                    SFC/Scannow

It should not harm anything and will fix any errors in the Win7 Installation. Look at the log - it doesn't take long.

                      NEW FYI

I thought today I would take a look at the V12 of A5. So I DL it and installed it.

I opened both the Alpha Sports database as well as my little one attached above.

Each startup form in its respective database did load as it should.

So I guess I should presume this to be a V10 problem as opposed to a universal computer problem.... YES???? This was not a problem when I had V8 installed. I cannot reinstall V8 because I don't have the DL site for it nor my license number.

                        Thanks Ted

I gave that a go and you were spot on. About 2 seconds max in time. I can't really tell that it found anything as it did not seem to say error anywhere. I went to A5V10 and tried again and same results, no startup form functioning.

Takes a bit longer than that as it trawls all of the Win7 programmes. Not long means about 3 or 4 mins on an SSD.
You did run it from the Elevated prompt, didn't you? (Used to be called the Command Prompt.)
You have checked the Compatibility bit?
                          I'll try your app.

I notice you are using Libraries. Is the lib accessible from the application? Is the lib area in a different partition?

yes Ted, I did go to the Elevated (old Command) prompt and changed to the highest directory on the C drive then type SFC scannow and tapped the Enter key

not sure where to check on the compatibility aspect in A5.

I did not intentionally set up any library location. Where should I look for the settings?

Wrong. Leave the directory as C:\Windows\system32

                              Compat.
Right Click V10 Icon on the DeskTop. Choose Troubleshoot Compatibility.

                              Library.
CP/Workspace Properties/Libraries. Make sure the location is accessible.

                                TED,

Redid the scannow in the suggested directory. Still took about 2 seconds and returned some 10 lines of information.

Did the Troubleshoot Compatibility several times from varied points of view but none brought about change

Did not find a Workspace Properties/Libraries Option. Used File / Database Properties and there is a Library Tab. I added the mainmenu.alb under the library tab. it was in the same directory as the database itself.

                                Still none worked.

Given this issue was gone in V12 would that not lead us to the probability there is something awry in V10?
