Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Table Encrypted Using a Different Key

    Hi All

Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? If so have you found a cure?

We have a client that has been using our V10 runtime system for several years and today one of the DBF's has become 'locked' and no longer accessable. In the past, we have experienced this with two or three different clients over the years and have never managed to re open the file again, fortunately they had backups BUT this client has no backup.

Be very grateful if anyone can find or suggest a way to open the attached .dbf!

    Thanks

    Michael

There is probably a way around the password, and there is certainly a way to brute force access if the password cannot be bypassed. One site offers the a tip about changing certain binary data within your file using a hex editor to disable password protection: http://www.antionline.com/archive/in.../t-218086.html. Test that on a copy.

It is still not wholly uncommon to see instances where an application respects a security setting, but the security is not particularly relevant. Cases would include where the file has a flag designating protection, but the data is not actually encrypted. If the above doesn't solve your problem, open the file in a hex editor and see if information is recognizable in plain text.

If that doesn't work, I'd suggest grabbing a copy of John the Ripper and writing some bridge code to use the output of JTR's guesses as input for a dbase library's open calls.
Not my text, off another site, but a Hex Editor might help.

Apologies to anyone I haven't managed to upset yet.
You are held in a queue and I will get to you soon.

I might be able to help you. You'll need the adb, alb, alm, alx files. Any data that you know was in the table would also be useful. If you have an unencrypted table, even if it has no data, or an accurate structure of the table, this will help a lot.

Based upon studying the problem, I stand a reasonably good chance to recover the data in a timely manner. If lucky, it could be really quick. Otherwise, it may be a little bit more tricky, but I still believe I can get it done.

Email me directly, and we can discuss my recovery services.
