Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Filter/Limit/Cascase... a Dropdown based on another field in the grid... that is NOT a dropdown

    Hi All,

I have a dropdpwn called Project I need to filter the projects by the ClientID field that is on the same grid. (The Project Table has ClientID In it) as In I only want to list projects that are fro this client. Common scenario i would have thought.
First I work thorugh all the options in the SQL Select | Expert options but there is nothing in there about referencing the Grid or fields in it
So I thought Cool! I can use Cascading Choices... Wrong! see attached screenshot
    CascadingQuestion.PNG

So this Cascading option can ONLY work with another Dropdown! Why??
How else can I Filter the Dropdown based on a record on the same row?
I would have thought it would have been EASY to filed on a field in the current row.

    Thanks in advance

    Bruce

OK, So now I have found videos M47

    OMG! that is so convoluted!
There must be a simpler way I want to do this all over my application and I don't want to freate custom controls and XBasic functions every time

Does anyone have any other options?

    Thanks in advance

Re: Filter/Limit/Cascase... a Dropdown based on another field in the grid... that is NOT a dropdown

        hello

I do not know how you are entering the client id and expect the project id to be filled in by limiting to the client id from the grid.
so I am assuming the following:
the grid is editable, client id is entered by you ( not a drop down) you want the project id to show only where the projects are for that client id only.
if all the statements are true then try the following..

        Code:
        create the grid as usual.
for the project id do not use drop down, but keep as text box and select look up and then select edit combo.
        fill in the necessary info.
then there is one checkbox that says dynamic filter click on that and fill in the required information and select the client id as the linking field
and change the load data to ajax callback.
        try on the working preview.
is this what you are after?
if my explanation is not clear post back I will attach a screencast.
edit: this may work with auto suggest too, I think.

Re: Filter/Limit/Cascase... a Dropdown based on another field in the grid... that is NOT a dropdown

          Hi Govindan,

As always you provide very detailed answers and it has opened my eyes to the Look Up function.
Alas there is one problem with this solution is by leaving the Project as text box , I am left with the ProjectID of 7 being displayed, Not the Project Name of "Data Conversion" which is what I want displayed .. which is what the Drop-down box provides.
I am perplexed why the Look-up function has the ability to have a dynamic filter and reference a field on the grid yet a drop down box does not (apart from cascading against other drop-down) . Seems a shame.

However you have provided me with some things to think about.

          Thanks again

use the edit combo box not the text box for the client_id and display the name and store the id.
            check it out.
I can do some more to just show the name

edit: to display the name this is what id so far.
I added another field in the target table as client name varchar
I include the name in the grid.
used the edit combo for the client id and selected as usual name to display and id to store. then used the fill in fields to fill in the name and disabled that field by setting enable property to 1=2

post back if this is okay with you

              I reread your post #6.
              Project as text box
              sorry

you are correct I will try to add that.

no, according to your first post you entered the client id and the projects were to be filled in.
                my edit combo does that.
and name can be added too. see post #7
                Hi Govindan,
                Thanks for that
I did get it to work by making the ClientID a drop-down then I can make ProjectID a Dropdpwn and use the Cascade option… But this seems like extra overhead of SQL and rendering of another drop-down for no purpose but to trick the Project Drop-down.
But it works so I am happy, just don't see why the Drop-down box can't dynamically filter like the Look-up can.
Seems like a missing option, I hate "workarounds" like this where you end up creating an extra Drop-down to "Trick" the grid to do something it should do anyway.

Anyhow, Thanks so much for your help.

ok this is what I came up with. while this may not be what you are looking for this is a close match..

I created a field project_name in the target table and on the edit combo list I filled in the project name also.
so the project name is visible and I disabled it by setting enable/disable to 1=2
