Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to get data from current cell in browse

I would like to capture into two variables information about the currently selected cell of a browse.

The two variables are 1) the field name of the column I am in and 2) the value in the cell that has focus.

This is probably simple, but I'm not finding it.

    Thanks.

You need to code an event to do that. Onfetch or onrowdblclick seem appropriate.

this.Active_Drilldown() 'will return the path to the active cell
eval(this.active_drilldown()+".value") 'will return the cell's value

Note: There is no event fired when you switch from cell to cell in the same row.

This is perfect. You really know your Xbasic.

The type of event will either be onrowdblclick or I may have a separate button to trigger this. I just couldn't find the way to capture the data.

Thank you very much. This is going to be very useful. Never needed it before.

If you mean a separate button on the form containing the browse you'll have to adjust the code. Active_drilldown() for the button is different than for the browse and "this" is no longer pertinent.

Glad you added that bit of wisdom. Thanks.

You can also do it with a button in the browse column. Unzip and add the table to a database you have.

Using v10 I see the variety of cell functions and supercontrols/ no buttons apparent
There must be a new kind button method in v11 ? or something I haven't learned ?
              Column / Properties/other/display format/button is the only method I know in v10

                Ray,

Slow on the uptake this morning. Did you have a question or were you commenting?

Ya there is a question. I was a bit too brief explaining
Your example browse, described as having a button in the browse column. I cant see a button. I can see the other examples in different columns.
                  Q. is there a column with a button in your example?, if so either I cant see it with V10 or I'm not looking too well.

Quite by chance I did some mentoring yesterday with a client who uses v11 - and saw a new item on the browse edit toolbar that he used to place a button in a browse column. So i'm wondering if the button you created was done with v11 and is not usable by v10
In v10 we can of course create cell buttons.

So is it possible I cant see those in your example because V11 does it differently?

The example was created in v11 which might explain the "invisibility" somehow. It does use the Column / Properties/other/display format/button method you mentioned. Did you try viewing in design mode?

Speaking of the embedded browse on the form, not the saved browse.

                      That was it
                      I was being obtuse.
