Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    check for duplicate record before SQL insert

    I use the below xbasic function in a button to enable the user to send some data from one table to another. What I'd like to add to this is some code that will FIRST check to see if there is already an existing record and if so cancel the insert function and tell the user in a message box that a matching record already exists.

    I'm still a xbasic novice and as such not sure how to go about this. I'm thinking a need an If/then/else clause in here.

    Code:
    function Send_to_EventsPT_Table as c (e as p)

    dim cn as sql::connection
    cn.Open("::Name::SQL") 'saved connection string
    dim args as sql::arguments

    args.set("arg1",e._currentRowDataNew.StartTime)
    args.set("arg2",e._currentRowDataNew.EndTime)
    args.set("arg3",e._currentRowDataNew.StaffName)
    args.set("arg4",e._currentRowDataNew.Staff_Specialty)
    args.set("arg5",e._currentRowDataNew.Patient_ID_Num)
    args.set("arg6",e._currentRowDataNew.ClientID)
    args.set("arg7",e._currentRowDataNew.DateTimeCreated)
    args.set("arg8",e._currentRowDataNew.TypeOfVisit)

    cn.Execute("INSERT INTO EventsPT (STARTTIME, ENDTIME, EVENTNAME, Field1, GroupID, clientid, Notes, Field6) VALUES (:arg1, :arg2, :arg3, :arg4, :arg5, :arg6, :arg7, :arg8)",args)

    cn.close()

    END FUNCTION

      Suppose someone actually wanted to create a duplicate record...I don't know why but I know for instance the same customer can call twice and if you're using a table, you might need to determine what really constitutes a duplicate.

        or in the same function inserting into the sql you can check before inserting see if the record exist then send an alert message and exit the function, rather than connecting to sql and send a sql error message.

          How would I write this into my code above?

          Thank you. For my purposes I'd want to check for a duplicate prior to the record being inserted.

            before inserting the record execute a select statement using where condition and check for resultset next row, if present warn the user the record already exist and exit the function if not then go ahead and execute the insert statement and tell them a record was successfully inserted.

              Gandhi, you have been so helpful in so many threads could you be more specific on how to do that in a simple grid? Oh and if you need to wait until after the holidays no problem everyone knows how hectic it can be a couple of days before xmas. Hope you have a good one!
              Thanks!

                How about this?

                select fieldA, fieldB, count(*) from table
                group by fieldA, fieldB
                having count(*) > 1

                  here is a short video of what I am doing.

                  here is the segment of the code I am using to check if the record exist prior to insert

                  Code:
                  'check for the record if exists inform and exit
                  		dim sqlSelect as c
                  		sqlSelect = "SELECT * FROM inventory_reorder WHERE item_id = :newID"
                  		dim args as sql::arguments
                  		args.add("newID",id)
                  		result = cn.Execute(sqlSelect,args)
                  			if result
                  			dim rs as sql::ResultSet
                  			dim flag as l
                  			rs = cn.ResultSet
                  			flag = rs.nextRow()
                  				if flag
                  	    			addReorder = "alert('The item is already in the list');"
                  	    			exit function
                  	  				cn.close()
                  if the record does not exist then I continue with the insertion part of the code.

                  happy holidays and a wonderful new year.
