Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Change field names?

    Hi Guys,

    I need to change 16 field names dynamically.

    Here is what I have so far and it is not quite right.
    Code:
    for x = 8 to 34 step 2
    fld = increment_value(fld)
    DELETE expression_result
    expression_result =  "Size "+alltrim(str(x+2))
    eval("parentform:Size "+fld+".object.lbl_size_"+fld+"") = expression_result
    next
    I have run Debug and the Expression_Result is correct, it seem that I am referencing the field names correctly.

    Please point me in the right direction.

    Re: Change field names?

    If you want to change a field name, the syntax is:
    Code:
    DELETE expression_result [COLOR="#0000FF"]'this does not have to be inside the loop[/COLOR]

    for x = 8 to 34 step 2
    fld = increment_value(fld)[COLOR="#0000FF"] 'What type variable is fld? What is its original value?[/COLOR]
    expression_result =  "Size "+alltrim(str(x+2))[COLOR="#0000FF"] 'if you are adding 2 here, why not for x = 10 to 36 step 2 and not add 2 ?[/COLOR]
    eval("parentform:Size "+fld+".object.name") = expression_result
    next

      Re: Change field names?

      Hi Gabe,

      fld = "00"

      Thanks for your reply. I think I have asked the question incorrectly. It should be change field labels on a form.

        Re: Change field names?

        Assuming the name of the object is "Size 1" (when the value of fld is 1):
        eval("Size "+fld+".text") = expression_result

          Re: Change field names?

          Hi Gabe,

          That works great thanks. Small detail, the field label format is SIZE_01_LBL.

          Working solution:
          Code:
          fld = "00"

          DELETE expression_result

          select
              case Contacts->Size_Ref= "UK"
          for x = 8 to 38 step 2
          fld = increment_value(fld)

          expression_result =  "Size "+alltrim(str(x+2))

          eval("parentform:Size_"+fld+"_lbl.text") = expression_result
          next
          Thanks again for your help, have a good Christmas.

            Hi Gabe,

            What would I need to change in the script, to get the same result in a report?

              Nothing. Just dim expression_result as global .
              Note, per your script, in the report, you will have the name of the last field, i.e. the last iteration of expression_result.
              If you want each field's name, that's a different story and depends on how you want to use it in the report.

                Re: Change field names?

                Would I still use parentform as in eval("parentform:Size_"+fld+"_lbl.text") = expression_result when using the code in OnPrintIni?
                Regards

                  No, that won't work.
                  You would run the script on the form first before you call the print script.

                    The script on the form is doing the task perfectly.
                    The field names that need to change are on the report. So I don't understand your reply.

                      Well, that's a horse of a different color.
                      I am afraid, since I do not have the latest versions that have better manipulations of the report, I am not the one to advise on this matter.
                      Best of luck.
