Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5 Desktop User Interface design ?

    Does anyone know of a way to remove ONLY the Maximize button from the main A5 window? My app's interface is relatively small, probably takes up 1/5th of the screen on a high res. large screen monitor. I would like to be able to minimize it, but not maximize it as the application looks somewhat retarded with the layout at the left top corner of the screen and a large blank area filling the rest of it. I could remove all of the menu buttons with "-nosysmenu" from the command line and then add my own minimize and close buttons, but if I were to use that method, it would look more polished if I could also remove the title bar all together and leave only a thin border around the main app window allowing for a custom title bar. I read every post I could find as well as the documentation and found a lot of good info, but nothing on removing only the max button. I thought perhaps someone had come across it somewhere before or figured it out on their own. A5 has a wealth of information, just sometimes difficult to find what you're looking for.

    You can disable both min/max at startup, but not just one (-nominmax). See:

      Thanks for the reply Peter, I was aware of that but it doesn't fit the bill. With all the variance in screen resolution with modern computers, it would be a nice addition to be able to remove the maximize button or the remove the title bar completely giving even more flexibility for the interface design. There are work arounds, but they just aren't aesthetically pleasing in my opinion.

        You can do that, but it means all your forms have to be dialogs or use xdialog. You program the A5 shell to hide below the screen on startup. Working only with dialogs is possible but tricky. Xdialog requires even more coding, of course.

          Yes that's true and I have experimented with that idea before and you were the one that helped me go in the right direction, but it's a major pain to get everything working smoothly. A simple -NOMAX switch would be nice, although most likely won't happen with the desktop on the back burner these days.

          It's not a deal breaker anyway, I'll live with it.

          Thanks again for your input!

            Okay, using Marcel Kollenaar's code as a starting point and doing some research on the windows api, I came up with some code to disable the maximize button on the main A5 window. I've tested it on Windows XP & Windows 7 using A5 ver8 & A5 ver11.

            Here's the code if you're interested:

            Code:
            declare user32 swl@SetWindowLongA LLLL
            'Thanks To: Marcel Kollenaar for his code on the API - SetWindowPos function & GetActiveWindow function
            declare user32 SetWindowPos LLLLLLLL
            declare user32 GetActiveWindow L

            Constant global GWL_STYLE = -16 'Changes the style of the window
            Constant global WS_CAPTION = 12582912 'Gives the window a title bar
            Constant global WS_THICKFRAME = 262144 'Makes the window resizable
            Constant global WS_MAXIMIZEBOX = 65536 'Include this for a Max button enabled
            Constant global WS_MINIMIZEBOX = 131072 'Include this for a Min button enabled
            Constant global WS_SYSMENU = 524288 'Must also specify WS_CAPTION - remove this to remove all 3 buttons on title bar
            Constant global SWP_NOMOVE = 2 'Retains the window current position
            Constant global SWP_NOSIZE = 1 'Retains the window current size
            Constant global FLAGS = SWP_NOMOVE .OR. SWP_NOSIZE
            Constant global HWND_TOP = 0
            Constant global HWND_TOPMOST = -1
            Constant global HWND_NOTOPMOST = -2

            'Get the pointer to the active Window.
            Dim hwnd as N
            hwnd := GetActiveWindow()

            'Disable the maximize button using the Windows API
            swl(hWnd, GWL_STYLE, WS_SYSMENU .OR. WS_CAPTION .OR. WS_THICKFRAME .OR. WS_MINIMIZEBOX)

            SetWindowPos(hwnd, HWND_TOP, 0, 0, 0, 0, FLAGS)

            xbasic_wait_for_idle()

            :a5.Show()
            See pic below

              Where is the SWL() function to be found?

                It's an alias for the SetWindowLongA function- See http://www.alphasoftware.com/documen...ic_DECLARE.xml

                  There it is right in the first line - sorry I didn't see it.
