Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Basic Grid Component Question on Lookup Featrue

I have an Items table, to make it simple I have the pk which is ID and Item_desc and SupplierID,. I can setup an editable grid control and setup the lookup of SupplierID to the Suppliers table, my problem is, How do I show the actual name of the supplier instead of showing supplier id. I can see actual suppliers name when I press any supplier initial because I have setup the Lookup style to "Starts With" and successfully saved the FK to the items table. it is very annoying to just see Supplier id's. A very basic one but could not find a workarcound, also I have used SQL select statement instead of a table but could not update it.Thanks!

depends on how you setup the look up.
if you do this way, then
setup look up, dynamic, alphaDAO connection, table, lookup field and check the box below it to store another field and store the id,
then the id will not be seen but stored.
but the name will be seen but not stored.
    thanks for reading

Thank you Gandhi for the reply, I figured out that it is not working if II use the lookup type to Autosuggest List, there is no properties of field to return, When I tried Edit Combo List as the Lookup type, there is a field to return property . I had to use a SQL Query as a data source rather than a table just to supply/combine the CategoryID and the Category Name and I setup the CategoryID Field on the lookup.

I was suggesting a different way to do the same and it will give you what you are looking for. I made a little screencast to show you.

Thank you so much Gandhi, I am now going to love visiting the forum again because of you. This is the only resource of Alpha Anywhere aside from a few books and hundreds of videos that are hard to find specific topics and the Wiki which sometime contains misleading information. But anyway I really appreciate your effort in helping Alpha users. By the way, what version are you using? why is it that when I try to duplicate what you are doing , the interface is not the same with mine? Thanks once again

              my apologies.
i am in version 11 i did not expect radical change in the interface on version 12 from version 11.
              sorry about that.

IT is still very Helpful, I found it, thanks very much!

                Edit:
BTW, what is the advantage of your approach against the Autosuggest and Edit combo list? And How many records does a vendor lookup can contain so that it wont affect speed. Just in case there are 50,000 vendors will it still be applicable?

in that situation using lookup with grid will be the best, the grid can have a search. it will be simple.
you want me to show that?

Thanks very much!. Very Helpful Tip Gandhi, I noticed on your field list, you have itemid and item description item size etc. In your table design of the purchase details, did you amke fields for item description, item size, item_case? In my own table design of the purchase order detail, I only have item_id, price, extension, I did not create fields for item_description, Item_case, so in your example I do need to create a field for item description right? But if this is the case then I would need to break a database normalization rule (storing the same information twice).

                      no you don't have to.
you simply use what you need to use. I have different need.
( when I send in a purchase order via email, it goes to a rep and then they either forward my email order or transcribe themselves. I am protecting from any errors on their part)
