Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Create an executable expression

    I have almost all of the kinks worked out of a fairly large script to make sure we don't schedule too many appointments for interviews.

    The last piece is to update the control table by incrementing a "used" field corresponding to a specific time on a specific day.

    My code already has the date and time selected and all that works just as needed.

    The problem is that I need to construct one line of code that will update one of 8 specific fields in a record as determined by an x-dialog selection. I know the specific time, and in my code, I determine which field number it is. all fields are named "T{fieldnumber}_oused".

    What I want to do is to create a change operation on the table that would be

    tbl.t1_oused = tbl.t1_oused+1 where "1" could be a number between 1 and 8.

    The following code shows what I have done, I have tried "evaluate_template(evaluate_string())" to no avail.

    Code:
    'now lets update the record with a new interview
    dim incr as N = 0
    incr = case(time="8:00 AM",1,time="8:30 AM",2,time="8:45 AM",3,time="9:00 AM",4,time="9:15 AM",5,time="9:45 AM",6,time="10:15 AM",7,time="10:30 AM",8)
    dim tbl as P
    tbl = table.open("appt_control")
    tbl.index_primary_put("A_Date")
    tbl.fetch_find(SELECT_DATE)
    fldname = "T"+alltrim(str(incr))+"_oused"
    tbl.change_begin(.t.)
    	evaluate_string("tbl.{fldname} = tbl.{fldname}+1")
    tbl.change_end(.T.)
    tbl.close()

    From the interactive:

    Code:
    ?fldname
    = "T7_oused"

    ?evaluate_string("tbl.{fldname} = tbl.{fldname}+1")
    = "tbl.T7_oused = tbl.T7_oused+1"
    any help would be appreciated.

    Tom

    You are actually using a plus sign in the fieldname? Really?

      Re: Create an executable expression

      Tom, I'm not sure exactly what the desired result is, but am I on the right track with this:

      Code:
      dim incr as n = 3
      ?"tbl.T" + incr + "_oused = tbl.T" + (incr + 1) + "_oused"
      = "tbl.T3_oused = tbl.T4_oused"

        I think he wants a self writing code line.

        fldname = "T7_oused"
        fld_num = extract_string(fldname,"T","_")
        new_num = val(fld_num)+1
        ? new_num
        = 8
        ? "tbl."+fldname
        = "tbl.T7_oused"
        ? "tbl.T"+new_num+"oused"
        = "tbl.T8oused"

        eval("tbl."+fld_name) = eval("tbl.T"+new_num+"oused")
        There can be only one.

          Al,
          no, I'm just trying to increment the value of one field by 1. No, there is no "+" in the field name'

          Lenny,

          See above.

          Stan,
          You came up with an answer similar to what Steve Andrews just showed me. I was close, but this works just fine:

          Code:
          tbl.change_begin(.t.)
          	eval("tbl."+fldname) = eval("tbl."+fldname)+1
          tbl.change_end(.T.)
          Thanks everyone for all your help.

            About to reply stating that you need eval() not evaluate_template() when I saw your last post.
            Also noted that:

            incr = case(time="8:00 AM",1,time="8:30 AM",2,time="8:45 AM",3,time="9:00 AM",4,time="9:15 AM",5,time="9:45 AM",6,time="10:15 AM",7,time="10:30 AM",8)
            Does not seem to fit a particular pattern. The time span varies from 15 to 30 min. Is that how you intended it?

              G,
              Patterns are not the issue. We have set times based on employee start times and break times. DOn't try to make sense of that. Its government!

                I wasn't. I had a concern that if the value of time is not exactly "8: 30 AM" i.e., if there is a spca before, within or after, you might get the wrong outcome and thought there might be a more sophisticated way to do this. I am assuming "time" is either a short time field or variable.

                  G,
                  Actually, it is a field I display in a dialog box that is presented to the user. If a "time" is full, it is not displayed. In other words, I control the "time" field that is returned.
