Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    US States-Cities-Zipcodes

Trying to be helpful and contribute:

I do not know if this is already on here somewhere, and potentially an easy find online elswhere but if not - here it is for the taking.

This is all of the US City, State, and Zipcodes in one csv file.

    Hope it helps someone.

Note: I have an extra field in this you can toss called costX. I ued that field as a cost multiplier for distance travel. In other words if you were pricing a job in a certain zipcode (think distance from office) and this zipcode would or could potentially cost you more because it was harder to service or a greater distance to travel you could increase the multiplier.
OR you can just toss the extra field and use this as you see fit.

    Enjoy.

If anyone uses it make sure to pad left the zipcode with any missing zeros.

The extra field I use in mine is for county. Counties in certain states have extra sales taxes. Actually, mine has county, rate, maximum fields for later computations.
I use it when the the user places the zip code, it does a lookup on city and state. The one area of potential error is that some zip codes cross county lines.
example: Florida, zip code 34434 is listed as levi county, Dunnellon, but is actually citrus county, citrus springs and the tax rates for the counties are different.
citrus county has a cty tax of 1% up to 5000.00 and levi has none.
A car dealer is required to pay that 50.00 even if they did not collect it on a sale of 5000 or more.

        Hi Dave,
If your zip code database only contained cities in Florida, that would make sense to add the county field - you could then have a city listed twice with same zip but different counties. But would you do it that way if you were keeping data for all the states? Because in my town we not only pay tax according to state/ county, but also city.

Glad to see my addition has been helpful!~ BTW counties and "parishes" are listed as well. Basically theres alot of goofy stuff out there. Take Alaska for instance - they have boroughs, what does it cost to operate a service/sales business there by zipcode? lol I cannot imagine!
so like gary, david, and robin pointed out there is a lot to consider when dealing with this area. I hope that this csv file serves as a good starting point for many people, but still you need to research your needs and adopt it according to your needs!

Robin, My zip database is over 12 years old. I chose to leave municipalities out of it. I have a separate area in my tax handling where the amount is added. Many times, the out of state taxes and tag/title fees have to be entered by hand. It is just a fact of life. Can you imagine the research to look up all the different scenarios that are out there? Fortunately, Dealers have a way to get the phone numbers to find all the information needed and can get most from a huge book kept up by NADA.
example: SC charges 4% up to like $5000 and then none to 10,000 and then 6% all above 10,000. Then some townships have a separate tax, but not separate countiy taxes.
Dealing with(I think on memory) Delaware was a state tax, then county, then city, then township inside the city. And tags were also weird with extra stickers for each at 5.00+ each. Forgive if it was not Delaware?

Yep! There are zips that cross county lines. In my area we have a zip that crosses 4 county lines. And several that cross 2 county lines. I use zip lookup solely to provide the city and state. After that, I do the county lookup with USPS since they do the mail delivery.
