Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New Application Question

Not sure if this is the best place to post this, but here goes.

I have a client who provides in-home services for clients who are developmentally challenged. His employee visits the home, stays with the client or takes them places, etc. Up until now, he has been waiting for the employee to submit a timesheet, which he then turns into an invoice (for submission to the State) and then needs to visit the client and get their signature. All of this is very time consuming and he is looking for a better way.

My thought was to give each client a small Chrome book (or something similar) and set it up so the employee would need to sign in and out. This would ensure that the times for the employee would be accurate, unlike now. Once a week, the client would then review the record and sign off electronically. Another possibility might be to incorporate a thumbprint entry system.

What I'd like to know is if anyone has done something like this and might have some ideas for me or suggestions for improvement. Should this be done on A5V11 web or in the new Alpha Anywhere (which I admit I know zero about)?

    Thanks to any and all!

    Re: New Application Question

I think your's is a good idea. You could even use tablets. I'm doing something similar that I built with V11 but for desktop use. I would go ahead and use V12 since it has some stuff that will be a lot better for a more mobile application including an integrated signature capture in the UX component. I think I'd also try to build the thing completely out of UX components. I've recently installed V12 and started playing with it. The key difference is the new "panels" that allow you to give the application the look and feel of a native mobile app. The rest is very similar so you won't have problems going from V11 to V12.

As far as the app itself, I use different assignable "tasks" that the user picks from to describe the time used. The Admin of the timesheets can add or remove tasks. The user picks a date from the calender, picks a task from a dropdown and then enters a time. You can do most of this without having any true user data entry which is great for a mobile app. Just touch and select. I think it would work great.

      Re: New Application Question

      Charles,

Chromebook is probably cheaper than a tablet, so if you do that it can be a regular v11 web app. If you go tablet it will best be served by AA (v12). In AA, all the new emphasis is on mobile and the UX has a tremendous (overwhelming actually) amount of functionality "secretly" built in. By "secretly", I mean you wouldn't notice just by looking at the surface of it. But know that the mobile UX is kind of a paradigm shift from regular web development.
