Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

@DaveM, is the NCH software this one?
      "Debut Video Capture Software"

It's under $30, and if it does the same job as Camtasia, then I am sold.

I use Camtasia myself. You really cannot beat it for what it can do.

In Camtasia you can use Markers and Menus to allow viewers to short cut and hop to any part of the video. This way you would not have to watch a 2 hour video to find the one subject or example you where looking for. Plus the benefit of having the entire topic in one video with a menu would mean I would not have to load and watch a bunch of <5 minute videos to find what I wanted.

          Michael,
I use jing everyday for pictures and tried to use it for a video. It has a 5 minute time limit although it did a good job.
When I looked at the camtasia price, I was halted.
The NCH for an instructional video works very well for me. I have one that is on you tube at about 10 minutes and one that is too big for youtube that I host on a site. I am not sure how it could be better or worse since I never actually used camtasia.

I also have the nch movie app, moveplusx6 from serif and the widows movie maker for modifications. I do not like the serif offering at all.

              Re: Documentation or Lack Thereof

Alpha is a massive program. It is simple to use and for me has a clear paradigm. The documentation can be frustrating .... but the Alpha community is so helpful if you publish a clear well thought out question plenty of people jump in to help. To say there are only five people to trust is plain stupid! Selwyn, Jerry, Lenny, Bob Moore all contribute that suggest that Steve Woods, Steve Workings, David Kates, Sarah, jinx, Ghandi, Peter et al only rate as one trust worthy additional source of help.

I love the videos; I guess I have watched 500+ they don't need to be remembered just filed for latter use. It takes 10 -15 minutes a day. Us Europeans know Rome wasn't built in a day.

Alpha doesn't suit everyone but if you are happy with your current program why change to Alpha?

I once tried to compile a list of Alpha's free documentation but was overwhelmed. It saddens me to listen to unfair criticism.

Often when I ask a question the person replying gives a clear answer and quotes the Alpha documentation I missed.

Could the documentation be better yes.
Could Alpha add additional useful features yes.

Then ask yourself is everything you do perfect???

              Michael a total Alpha fan.
