Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    alpha5 active-link table

    Hello All,

I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to create an active-link to a table from one alpha database to another? I have two seperate alpha5 databases and when I have one open I just want to be able to read from a table in another database to create a report.

I know I can combine all the tables under a common directory but I really want to keep them separate.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Yes you can
You can always read from a table in another adb as long as it is not encrypted and a few other things people sometimes do and even then, it mostly possible.

You can read information from a table in any folder.

Thanks for the response. I don't see how a link can be made though - there is no option for an alpha5 table. Could you explain how to do this .

      Thanks,
      Bob

        Are both tables dbf?

You don't need a link. I'm not sure what you mean by "read from a table in another database to create a report". You can reference any table in any location by specifying the full path to the table. You can create a set where the parent is in the current database and the child is not.
          There can be only one.

OK - great, I see how you can create a set. I had tried it previously and got an error about the table being bound to another database but I now see that was because of my security settings.

            Thanks!!

              Two other notes.

You can add a table in another directory to any number of databases.

You can add a table in another directory to the desired database, create a mapped table with any/all field, drop the "real" table from the database. The mapped table still performs.
              There can be only one.

How would you add a table from another directory? Is the table updated from both databases - that would sound like an active link??

You can use FILE_ADD_TO_DB() and FILE_DROP_FROM_DB() to add and remove a table or set from any folder you have access to.

                    Re: alpha5 active-link table

Just as you would add any table except you navigate to its location.

Is the table updated from both databases
Yes, but you have the risk of trying to access it at the same time from both. One Alpha instance won't know what the other is doing.

Though it is best practice to keep all tables for a database in the same directory it is not a requirement. A table could be added to many databases., or none. If a table is used solely as a source for a lookup, for example, and the full path is specified in the lookup epresssion, then there is no need to have it be part of a database.

One reason to keep all the database tables and sets in one directory is portability. Much easier to copy one directory to a different location, especially a different machine, than it is to recreate the same relative directory structure on a different machine and copy scattered files.

By definition, an active linked table is a connection to a non DBF table.

It's not an active-link table as Al says. A-L is for sql and so forth.

To add another dbf table from a different location, from the controlpanel click on the big green + icon and then navigate to your location.
